Fun little Hydlide clone
Hydlide is a 1984 game that is sort of a proto-Zelda. Ringlorn Saga is a spiritual successor to it that ignores the rest of game history. Instead of hitting enemies with your sword, you just ram them to attack, similar to Ys. There is some depth to the combat: You can choose between attack and defend mode, you have three attack types (with each enemy weak to one type), and you get a few spells eventually. Most of your strategy will be simply to get behind the enemies to attack. The best part of the game is the sense of exploration it manages to pack into its small world. There are lots of little stories and moments to find along the way. I especially liked one detail that the game has if you die later in the story. The biggest weakness for me was how similar the underground tunnel segments are. They all use the same tileset and you can only see a small portion with your lantern. I found myself going through one of them, then finding that I needed a key on the other end, but by the time I found the key I had forgotten which of the tunnels I needed to go through. I recommend taking screenshots of each tunnel entrance and adding a note about where it leads. Aside from that, I didn't have any problems navigating the world. This is a short game. I completed it in about 4 hours and other might be faster. Not every game needs to be a massive epic and I found Ringlorn Saga to be an atmospheric, bite-sized adventure.
