I'm enjoying it, but it feels like... you know how Quake 1 & 2 had expansion packs by different developers? This feels like that but for Hyper Light Drifter.
I hate to review it entirely on how it compares to another game, so: A fun, atmospheric, but often relatively difficult top-down action game. Five stars for the soundtrack, four for the art, and the complete package is I think a low five-star kind of deal. Recommended.
I have really enjoyed my time with this one so far. A lot of people compare it to Hyper Light Drifter and I can see why, however the tone and atmosphere of Resolutiion feel very distinct.
Gameplay is fluid (after you get a new ability at about 40 mins of playing), Graphics are gorgeous and the soundtrack fits the game well.
I especially like how the levels don't feel as crammed as in other games. Resolutiion gives you the necessary time to breathe and to notice the finer graphical details and intriguing writing.
A few nitpicks I have are
-When aiming, the direction snaps to the horizontal axis if you are close to it. That feels kinda weird, but isn't a huge problem as the projectiles are quite large
-Clouds are not really pixelated like the rest. Again this looks weird in a few places, but is easily ignored.
As you can see I really struggled to find something negative. :)
So far I am having lots of fun and would highly recommend this. Especially at the low price.
The Hyper Light Drifter comparisons are understandable but this game is genuinely its own thing.
The Good:
- the game world is full of mood and little nods
- the soundtrack is a perfect fit and is well worth buying on its own
- the artstyle is colorfull and full of life, I loved it
- the combat is better than in HLD imo
- the humour generally helped make the game not feel too dry and artsy fartsy
The stuff that could've been better
- The story is too vague for its own good, I barely could care
- Some puzzles felt really weird and excessively complex, if it were for secondary stuff I'd be 1000% on board, but I feel like main quest puzzles should be less contrived
- Sometimes the humour was really not at the right time and took me off the contemplative parts of the game, you shouldn't (imo) break the 4th wall right in a very neat and chill exploration section
- Despite the gameworld being really neat, the lack of traversal options (especially in early game) combined with the frequent need to backtrack and branching paths make exploration take a lot of time and energy
- The 4 previous points ended up with me not caring enough to finish the game after being stuck on a main storyline puzzle where I was pixel hunting for 1+ hour to reach a specific piece, all the while having to constantly make very long detours and backtracking.
Imo the game started meh, got a really really great middle part, and then fizzled out when it should've wrapped up much more tidily.
It's still an absolute recommend for me
Half the time, I forget where I'm going- but I know this game is a lot of fun, it has a great mystery at its core, you absolutely need to go back and return to areas you could not get to before, and the levels/environments are just amazing. Also it's so colorful! Amazing use of color!
