really?
Maybe if you played this game when it came out, it would be worth the nostalgia factor, but otherwise, it's just a bad, repetitive FPS...

IF YOU DON'T KNOW IT, DON'T BUY IT
If you don't know exactly what you're getting, watch some YouTube videos or something. Because this game is so incredibly sub-standard for a new player, it will blow your mind. The controls are keyboard only (the mouse is very rudimentary). The MUSIC BLARES so you can't even hear most of the game sound effects. And the game itself is IMPRESSIVELY BAD. I'm used to build engine games. I love me some build engine games. I've beat Duke 3D at least 8 times by now, Shadow Warrior, and even WW2 G.I. ... GI had problems with hitscan enemies. This "game" barely passes for a Unity game someone with no game dev experience built in a week. I started on the second-to-highest difficulty, and kept dying so often I ended up down to the bottom difficulty just so I could figure out what the hell was going on. The graphics remind me of a somehow worse controlling version of Might and Magic Mandate of Heaven. Everything is FLAT. Huge open areas with nothing in it. The Build engine was NEVER made for this kind of ugly, open terrain and it highlights every flaw the Build engine ever had. (That is, you play to your strengths when you use an engine and they did the exact opposite). Now, for nostalgia kids, there's nothing wrong with loving this game. But as someone who never played this game (but played TONS of 90's games and Build engine games), this is bottom-of-the-barrel. This is the kind of game quality you would expect from a cereal box. Except Chex Quest is actually playable.

Very difficult game, and not even much fun as I remembered it.

Bad Level Desgin
Dare I do the unthinkable, and give a GOG.com game a bad review? Yes, I do. This game has some of the worst level design I have ever seen. You wander around aimlessly for hours on end trying to find "keys". Eventually you might find a key, most likely you wont. This review will only cover the first game in the series. I originally played this game when it came out, and I never got past the first level. That's right. I never got past the first level. I couldn't find any keys. Keep in mind this was back when the internet wasn't as big as it is today, so finding a walkthrough wasn't even a possibility for me. I did find the cheat codes and ended up cheating my way through the game. "rdstuff" solves the "keys" problem right away. I recently re-purchased the game on GOG, and you know what? The level design was just as bad as I remembered. I couldn't make it past the first level, just like I couldn't over ten years ago. Luckily I had the internet and managed to find a walk through. And for once I made it past the first level without cheating. I ended up playing through the entire first episode. I was proud of myself for making it all the way through without cheating. That said, I had to refer to a walkthrough on pretty much every level because the design is so confusing. Let me elaborate, you have to blow the environment up with dynamite to find certain keys and there is no obvious indication that you need to throw some dynamite (some will argue that a "crack" is barely visible on the wall, argue all you want I say, "barely visible" doesn't cut it, Duke Nukem 3D didn't have that problem when you could blow something up). A first person shooter should never require a walkthrough. The level design should be coherent. In this game it is not. Aside from the bad level design this game is insanely difficult. I can only imagine how difficult it was during a time when people weren't using WASD controls. Heck, I think that's why I gave up and cheated when I first played it, I was probably using the arrow keys to turn. I don't know how much I can criticize the difficulty. It makes the game not fun, is all I can say. Like I said I made it through the first episode without cheating. On the second episode, however, the walkthrough I was reading actually said to modify USER.CON in order to make the enemies less difficult. The walkthrough said to cheat! That is how hard this game is. I am talking about the second easiest difficulty setting, the default setting. I cheated through the second episode. Now, let me move onto the cuss pack, which is actually the main reason I bought the game on GOG.com. You see, when I originally played the game you had to buy the cuss pack from interplay for a buck just to prove you were old enough to have a credit card. Well I was sixteen, so I didn't get it, needless to say I was pretty excited to see what this cuss pack was all about. The cuss pack sucks $@!!s worse than fleas on moon pie. I'm restraining myself when I say that. I mean, don't get me wrong, it was hilarious to hear all the cussing at first, but it doesn't stop. I mean literally you hear a taunt full of cusses, "get the bleep of my land", then you hear it again, then you hear it again, then again, and again... It literally never stops. It is so annoying. It is insanely annoying. I mean, I got some laughs out of it, but then I was starting to go as insane as those alien mutants I was fighting. I found myself yelling more than they were yelling. I was screaming at this game so loud my neighbors knocked on my door and asked if I wouldn't mine being a little more quiet. Finally, I uninstalled the cuss pack. Then those aliens calmed down a bit. Well, that's really all I can say about this game. I think it was a great idea on paper, but in action it is just annoying. If it weren't for the bad level design, it might actually be alright. I say give it a try. Heck, it is one of those early controversial classics. Play it for a few minutes. Then cheat. Cheat your heart out, I say. The game is actually kind of fun when you cheat.
