Realms of the Haunting

It took me a while to play this. It's one of those games I used to be (when I was a teen) captivated by the box artwork that I never had the chance to put my hands on it. I'm an FMV nostalgic lover, a point-and-click classic player, and a hardcore fan of FPS...born in the 80s...so yeah, this one had to be played some day. I did several attempts during past years, but the very bad controls and low res of the game stopped me from achieving that goal. It took me quite some time of doing some research to have better resolution and binding control and finally, I accomplished one of my childhood guilty pleasures. So, if you have the patience to tune up the game a little bit I promise you you will be heading towards an amazing atmospheric experience though a game that today would be impossible to put on the market. It is a very special adventure, with a very nice story, very well told and with a tremendous effort to make you feel alone and scared just with a bunch of pixels. I enjoyed every second of it!

It's a sort of point and click / FPS hybrid where the FPS part falls flat. Of this game... Of this game, the atmosphere is super and the various maps are well don, especially the main mansion map is amazing. The game is a sort of FPS/point and click adventure, where the FPS falls flat because of the uninstering weapons and unresponsive NPCs (they look good at least). The various puzzles ranges from easy to irritating, it's easy to miss some important items and there is also a dead end. So don't rely on the quick save slot. Some areas of the game are too dark and the clunky controls doesn't help at all with the navigation. FMV videos are cheesy like a traditional '90s videogame, so they are perfect.

On the list of my favourite titles there's always gonna be Realms of the Haunting. Game which I fell in love with when I first played its demo. As a longtime fan of FPP genre (especially from the 90s) and adventure games enthusiast I felt that this mix of both in ROTH was a dream come true. Especially when it was told with so deep and compelling story of Armageddon. It was really one the first games which tried to paint transendence and realms of life after death. Like Dante we're visiting Heaven and Hell, we speak with demons and angels. Many interesting ideas with touch of typical English colour palette. Worth playing, worth experiencing.

A friend originally bought me this game from goodwill. I installed it and had a biased opinion about the game due to it being old. I didn't even play it yet, and I assumed it was going to be bad. My first play-through of this game was amazing. It has a rich story line and fantastic game-play. This game reminded me that game-play is more important than graphics. If you are a fan of dos games, shooters, horror games, adventure games; or anything in between, then you must play it. This game is a must play. Its my favorite game of all time.

...it's still haunting me! I never played a game again that has such a great atmosphere. The shooting, the occult setting, the puzzling, the cut scenes with real people, the story - all combined in a real thrill of horror. You'll always have a lack of ammo and heal potions, so you sneak through the levels. Always in tension. The setting is so well done, you fear every enemy in every moment. But it's never unfair to you, though. What I love about this game, is the fact, that it's varied throughout. You learn a lot about ancient myths (try Wikipedia), get to many different places. Egypt, earth, heaven and at least hell. The only thing I ever hated was one of the last puzzles in Scheol. It's a simple switch puzzle that has cost me ages to solve, or maybe I'm just not talented enough for pushing switches. But this game was so good, that I've chosen my nickname for the www from ROTH. And I kept it for 13 years now. ROTH was my perfect game experience. You must play it!
