Rayman 1 is Classic, but...

the 5 star is for the game itself not this version. i played Rayman 1 on the PSX. its an absolute classic, one my top 10 favorite games of all time. beautiful hard drawn animation, music and charm. it's essentially a European influenced fairy-tale into a video game platformer. this game has soo much charm, very colorful and it's one of best looking games I have ever played. yes this game is infamous for it's difficulty but c'mon it's not that hard just some practice and even the harder levels are a breeze for me. Rayman Forever is the DOS version, and sadly it's incomplete. it's missing music files and the defult DOXBOX setting is terrible for this game with poor frame rate and screen tearing, but there's a fix to get the best experience from this version, you need fan made patch called "Rayman Forever DX+ patch", it not only restores the missing files from the base game but also add the missing expansion pack called "Rayman 60 Levels". To fix the poor frame rate and screen tearing problem go to the doxbox cfg, change "core=dynamic" and "cycles=29000", then save, now the game plays 99% better. the downside is the opening cutscenes has choppy frame rate under 20fps with a sync issue, it actually runs okay-ish on older computers, newer ones not so much. also let me address the virus warning with Rayman Forever, it has remnants of an old virus named CIH, it's bad for much older 9x operating systems like windows 95/98/ME users, but for NTFS operating system users likes windows 2000/xp/vista/7/8/10/11 it will not be affected by it, it's a false positive. if you're getting a virus warning just ignore it. it will do nothing to you're computer. i wish gog would address this issue and i don't know they didn't fix the EXE file already! if you're looking for Classic Rayman Experience without any issues on modern PC, just get the fan-made remake "Rayman Redemption", it's free, all the original stuff is intact but in higher resolution and it has add new levels, enemies, sound-effects and items. Redemption it works perfectly on modern PC's and it's has proper controller support! this is the definitive way to play this classic game.

A great and hard platformer.

This game represents platforming in it's most pure state of fun and frustration. This game was originally released on the PlayStation and it translated pretty well on the PC, the graphics are identical, wich isn't a bad thing to start with and the levels were kept intact. The only differences are quite minor, like the lack of an introduction video (wich was pretty annoying in the first place) and the lack of sequential music, meaning that you will hear an entire track of the world with different tunes that were meant for a specific level or moment, but it's not a deal breaker, as the soundtrack itself is awesome. Mind you, regarding the soundtrack, this is the Forever version, meaning that some of the music tracks were cut to cram everything into a single CD, but don't worry, just click in the Community tab, right here at GOG and search in the Rayman forums, it was already covered there and you will get the full musical experience. Just one note of warning, this is old school platforming at it's best, meaning that the game can get a bit frustrating at parts, or as I like to say, the game WILL kick your ass and laugh at your face. Ok, maybe I made that up, but this game is seriously hard and not for the weak of heart or the impatient. Also, it's highly recommendable to play this with a controller, I play with a wired Xbox 360 controller and it works like a charm, this game uses DosBox, making the compatibility with controllers rather high. In fact, I think that this game can only be beaten with a controller, instead of the good ol' keyboard. So, overall, this game is fantastic, if you don't mind a little challenge and you have a controller attached to your PC.

About the music

Use Rayman Control Panel, is not a malware or anything, is a tool that can restore the music to this game, it uses the PS one music, so there you go major problem solved, it's still a letdown that G.O.G didn't want to fix this in any type, or give any solutions for this problem. About the game, this is rayman, nothing change from the DOS release, a precise plattaformer with challenging levels. Grab it with Rayman Control Panel.

Buy this classic,but play the fan remake

I only played a brief demo of Rayman 1, way back when it originally released. Its beautiful art and colourful atmosphere always stuck with me, so I finally budged all these years later. The art and atmosphere have aged well; it's still as wonderful as I remember it. (Don't expect much of a story though.) It's also one of the earliest platformers where the levels feel very organic, in the sense that you can't easily tell the level is composed of tiles placed on a grid. Its gameplay mechanics are just as timeless. They still form the core moveset used in Rayman Origins & Legends. What really hasn't aged all that well is the game's pacing and balancing: it's pretty stingy with handing out Rayman's abilities. It especially takes forever before you're given the ability to run. Thankfully, this issue is resolved in Rayman Redemption, a truly impressive fan remake of the game! (Just search for it .. can't miss. Yes it's free!) It's incredibly faithful to the original game, but now you already get some of the essential moves from the start, which by itself makes the game much more fun to play. Much-much more than that though, the levels have all been tweaked and rebalanced so the game's difficulty curve makes way more sense. It starts out easier, but I'd argue it becomes harder than the original towards the end. It even adds additional worlds and bosses that all feel like they belong. Compared to this GoG release: Redemption comes with the original music; it runs natively instead of via DosBox emulation (which means much faster load times); it also provides a much more reasonable "field of view". (Everything feels too zoomed-in in the GoG release .. not sure if it was originally like that.) In short, I'd say: buy this to support the developers (Rayman is a big part of Ubisoft's history! .. similar to Mario and Nintendo) .. but play the remake to experience the game as it was intended. Have fun!

Beware, music is missing in this version

This seems to be some cut-down version of the original game, which is not mentioned anywhere. A lot of music is missing or seems to be mismatching in contrast to the original. This is already noticeable from the first level of the game in the jungle. There seem to be some open source mods to this game that reintroduce the missing music, but that should not be necessary for a paid game. I don't know if this game ever had an officially cut down version like this or if this game is just being sold in a broken state. For those wishing to experience the game as it was originally, this is not the right place to find it.
