Randal’s Monday, developed by the Spanish team Nexus Game Studios, centers around geek and pop culture references from the 1990s and early 2000s, and gives a pretty authentic insight into how hard it is to overcome these stupid days of each week: Randal is the best main character one can ever imagine: he’s kleptomaniac, a sociopath and an awful friend above all.

After his friend Matt’s engagement party, waking up on a Monday morning with a massive hang over, Randal finds Matt’s wallet in his pocket. Inside the wallet, there’s that really precious engagement ring. It doesn’t take Randal much and long to sell the ring – triggering a fatal curse: Matt commits suicide, and Randal is now supposed to live through the same fateful Monday again and again, doing whatever is needed in order to fix the horrible situation. Randal must recover the one precious ring and his life, before the situation worsens… or the universe collapses.

Randal’s Monday features cynical humor, geek culture references and classic point & click adventure gameplay at its best: The game pays tribute to a generation of gamers, readers and viewers of subculture media products. Players will find countless items and references to things they grew up with. Retro video gaming consoles, anyone? Your favorite movies and TV series from the 80s, 90s and 2000s? It’s all in there! Take your time and pixel-hunt each screen for everything that’s in there – whereas the adventure gameplay takes care to use all of today’s comfort features, of course.

Games You ONLY Buy on Sale...

...for $2, and still feel ripped off. Only found out about this game, either because it was featured in a Point-and-Click sale, or because I decided to browse Daedalic's catalog. Just go ahead and play through the Deponia trilogy if you haven't, and if you have, maybe REPLAY it, instead of playing this. This game was just long and excruciating, and I almost can't put my finger on why... Took me 12 hours over the course of 2 days... There are dialogue scenes - especially near the beginning and end - that drag on ENTIRELY too long, you're just DYING for them to end... Wanna feel like you're in prison?...good, because that's what chapter 6 is all about, and it's arguably one of the longest scenarios in the game. A lot of 80s and 90s pop culture references are made, but referring to something else doesn't make you automatically cool, a lot of it comes off like "Hello, Fellow Kids!" (I'm honestly surprised that was a reference they DIDN'T make; they didn't really poke fun at themselves...) I do like dark humor every so often, but a lot of the humor here just misses its mark; you can only watch so many small animals get beat up, before it stops being funny, and starts coming off mean-spirited. It just wasn't any fun, and I honestly feel worse off after playing through all of it.

Good and Edible Adventure

Now that I've played half of the game, I would now like to also give my opinion on it. The characters of the game are all quite unique. Randal is very unappealing, but this makes this character out. I like him. The remaining characters are all allusions to Old series, movies or games. Some are very successful, others less so. The puzzles are sometimes illogical. Sometimes too easy. This is like the charm of old Adventures like Monkey Island did sometimes. (where you need 3 times say "but I want") Unfortunately, the developers could not implement this so well. The story of the game is very similar to the 80s and 90s. Where the original was clearly the movie Groundhog Day. It is solid and very fancy, but nothing new. The graphics convinced with the attention to detail and all the allusions to movies and games (and a lot of it), very well-drawn backgrounds and characters. TOP. The music is mainly suitable for the game, even if it is sometimes very melancholic. All in all, this game deserves 4 stars. Due to the puzzle there is a star less. Still recommended for adventure fans.

Disgusting in the old bad way

I love black humor, irony and any other clever way to make me laught. But this game is not clever, it is just a boring story with a real disgusting main character doing jokes that some teenagers would consider immature. The mechanics are the classic point-and-click. Perhaps it would be great if the story was good or the characters memorable, but it is not the case. It feels old and dated in a bad way. In conclussion, if you want to play a intelligent and funny graphic adventure, don't play this game. Many better games are waiting you out there.

Unlikable main character ruins the game

The good: Graphics are great. Inventory system works. Voice acting is above average. Some geek culture references. Point 'n Click adventures are awesome. The bad: The main character is an unlikable idiot. I totally hate the sosiopath who pawns his best friend's wedding ring and generally treats other people badly. Some problems require creative thinking (trying everything) Geek culture references are not always subtle and fit the story. Listening to a hot dog vendor talk about giant marshmallow man he saw last week seemed kinda fake and lame.

Lots of fun

I really enjoyed this game. It's fun, fairly logical (whilst still challenging at times) in its puzzles, and longer than I'd anticipated it to be.
