Real-time rail optimization

Well, the title says it. I'm not that fond of that game, because, well, it's real-time. Real-time, and all missions are time-limited, without any means to pause the game to think - except at mission startup, in "planning mode". Except that you need to build in advance, you cannot "plan" blueprints and only build them later on. So you're kinda limited during the startup phase, and you might need that time later on. Especially if you play using "collisions on" (no "ghost" mode for trains needing the same track at the same time). If you miscalculate something, you'll lose a lot of precious time - at least, if you're aiming for the best ranks in a given level. So, the industry chains are not bad, the graphics are fine, the music is OK, what made me lower the rating is that damn, unpausable real-time gameplay. Not fond of that forced rythm, even when you reconfigure a train, no pause at all. It's frustrating, at least for me. So, not a bad game, but... probably not the best choice for people who liked TTD (or OpenTTD), or Simutrans... It's not the same kind of gameplay at all.

Going beyond OpenTTD and Train Valley...

Railgrade is a cool, fun little gem for those that likes to "weave" train networks and solve logistical, automation, and resource management puzzles. You are an administrator tasked to solve a resource problem specific parameters in a region on an another planet for some corporate overlord. The game features trains, well put humor, retrowave music and good old fashionable, "tongue in cheek" capitalism! Try not to borrow more than you can swallow... I can spend hours upon hours redoing a region to tweak and tinker my layout in a better way. Haven't come far yet but apart from the beginner missions/regions you have much freedom in how you want to solve each region and they're all saved individually if you want to save a specific layout. Some have complained about lack of advanced signaling but honestly what we got here is plenty enough. Same goes for lack of sandbox mode (promised to come later) but some of the regions are almost like that in that you can put down a specific industry anywhere you like, just like in OpenTTD. The timer (optional either way) doesn't start before putting down a train so that's a bonus when saving and creating a "template". Overall simple mechanics, but hard to wrap around (literally) once you're further in. There are room for improvements. Couple of things that I find annoying (which it seems the developer is interesting in fixing): Excessive tutorials. And the game doesn't remember anything as you're forced to go over it again if you choose to go back to the early regions. When you've finished an earlier region the focus on the overworld is switched back to where how far you've come and you have to scroll back. Railgrade have some advanced features that are hidden until you get further into the campaign, like auto-patching, and you can disable ghosting (thus adding difficulty) and the timer, and add a cheaty "millionaire"-mode. I'm loving it!

Supply chain Puzzle

If you are looking for RR game like Railroad Tycoon, Transport Fever 2, or Railroad Empire, look elsewhere ... this isn't the game for you. This is a timed puzzle, you use railroads to move EVERYHING (including power produced by power plants). Even if two buildings are adjacent, you need to set up a railroad to move material between them. Personally, I despise any kind of time constraint in my games, and wrote this game after watching Nilaus' video. But the timer isn't that bad. First, for each puzzle, the timer doesn't start until you build your first train. So the player can build factories, track, mines, train stations, etc., etc., assuming he/she has enough yen. Once the first train is built, the timer starts. Even saving & exiting the game doesn't doesn't allow the player to view the current state of the map. The faster that you complete a puzzle, the better your letter rank (S, A, B, C). Objective: Most puzzles involve exporting off the map, or supplying a city, with a certain amount of some item. But some involve achieving an export rate (e.g export 20 appliances per minute). Suspect that I haven't played half the map yet, The puzzle start becoming tediuous, and for that reason, I've put this game away for while. Good graphics & tutorial. And the UI is intuitive; laying track & dealing with signals is easier than Transport Fever 2.

Amazing puzzle game

I can't believe someone could make such a good mix of OpenTTD, Train Valley, etc. Game flew under my radar, but it's definitely a 5/5 in my books.

Sid Meier's Railroads...IN THE FUTURE

It's fun! It has a lot of elements familiar to any fans of the genre, but it does a good job of adding things like multiple altitude layers without making it overly complex. I'm enjoying it quite a bit.
