Firewatch-ish

- No bugs encountered. - Finished in 3 hours (+- 5 minutes). - Excellent voice acting. - There's a jump scare relatively early on. Not too severe though. - Very similar to Firewatch in terms of graphics and gameplay, but drifting into the supernatural. Atmosphere is arguably even better than Firewatch. - The overall story isn't very fleshed out. The game is a nice ride overall, but when reflecting on what just happened, there are lots of loose ends and mysteries. In this regard, it's the opposite of Firewatch. The moldy backpack we found in the back of a car? Does not mean anything. The footprints in the boat house? Who knows. Recommended for anyone who has played Firewatch and wants more gameplay like it (if you haven't played Firewatch, play Firewatch instead of this). Just be prepared that the story is weak and only partially compensated by the atmosphere.

Fun Little Horror/Mystery Game

Given this game was made by a solo developer, I think they did a great job. Some ready-made assets were used/modified, which I don't hold against them. You don't need to make everything from scratch for your game to be good. That said, the visual design of the few characters you meet feels a little inconsistent. I enjoyed the music and use of sound, though it could have been mixed a little better I think. Not a sound engineer, so take that with a grain of salt. Some sound effects just felt a little louder than they needed to be. The delivery of voice lines could use some work, but I don't hold it against them. Story was fun, felt engaged with the way it unfolded. The game wasn't too "hand-holdy". Reminded me a little of the 2020 movie "The Empty Man" (underrated; highly recommend) in some of the themes. Clocked about 4 hours total while taking my time to explore without looking anything up. That said $15 ($13.49 on release at GOG) feels a little steep for what it is, though I couldn't say how much of that decision was on the dev or the publisher. The game also made my computer run unnecessarily hard, even while dropped to 1920x1080 on medium settings; might just be something with the Unreal Engine, who knows. My computer isn't top-of-the-line, but it's not that bad. All-in-all, I enjoyed my time. I love indie games and hope the developer continues to make new things.

What happens at night in the shadows?

Recommended if you like adventure games that focus on the story rather than overly complicated mechanics, such as: Oxenfree, Firewatch, The Suicide of Rachel Foster. You play as a police investigator looking into incidents of people disappearng at a park. The game takes place entirely at night, which makes the journey feel much more mysterious, with a constant lingering feeling that something is about to happen or go wrong. The game does an excellent job of making you rely on your imagination as the narrative unfolds, without needing to resort to cheap jumpscares or overly dramatic moments. There are other characters in the game, but most of the time you will be exploring the wilderness on your own, with a radio & walkie talkie as your companion as you report updates on the situation. The gameplay time is relatively short, with a runtime of about 3-4 hours. It would be great if there's a prequel or sequel to this game.
