Quake

Quake is a fantasic FPS from 1996 that uses proper 3D enviroments. This 3D geometry allows for complex levels with even more complex secret areas and levels. The gameplay is fast paced and has a wide variety of weapons and enemies, each having their own abilities. This version of Quake is a bit broken, the music is missing and the ability to change the resolution is almost non-existent. Therefor I would suggest using QuakeSpasm. This is an engine that keeps the classic Quake feel, but fixes a lot of issues including the inability to change the resolution. Another problem with this version of Quake is that the music is missing. However this problem can easily be fixed by following the instructions on the GOG forum (this also includes instructions regarding QuakeSpasm). https://www.gog.com/forum/quake_series/quake_1_2_quickstart_guide_music_and_source_ports/post1 Due to the fact that the game needs fixing and lacks music (for fix) I rate it 4 Stars, because the gameplay is fantasic and challenging and the after the fixing has a great atmosphere with music from Nine Inch Nails. Worth the money for sure if you're a fan of classic FPS games with well designed level and fun gameplay. Quick summary: Pro's: - Fast gameplay with well designed levels. - Lot's of Secrets. They are very well hidden and need some clever thinking. - A wide variety of weapons that all feel satisfying. - (After Fix) The music is fantastic. A great soundtrack created by the band Nine Inch Nails. Con's: - The music is missing. This can be fixed by following the instructions from the link above. - The resolution can't be changed or is nearly impossible to be changed. This can be fixed by using Quakespasm (See link above).

While I was born almost a decade after this game was released, playing it now, years later, I can truly understand what the community would deem as one of the best ever made. Id's of course famous for making the orginal FPS masterpiece, DOOM, but here is a refined, state-of-the-art masterpiece. In my opinion, Quake is everything DOOM wanted to, but could never be. The horror is real in this game. The graphics were, I believe, for the time, astronomicaally great. The 3-dimensional change adds a new layer of undiscovered potential. As I play this game, I try to cherish it, to enjoy it and have a mindset like those I am following from over 3 decades ago. In essence, its one of ther best games ever made.

Need to mention I haven't played the game previously, so it's definitely not the nostalgia. Played only the original version so far (by the way, the soundtrack can be easily restored with QuakeSpasm), but I had a great time with it. My only issue was with a strange bug(?) that removes your runes if you die and instead of loading a save state, you let the game restart the level for you. Highly recommended if you're looking for an FPS actually focusing on pure first person shooting relying on your skills.

Just add the "mods" into the game itself, they aren't that big to begin with. It is a fantastic remaster as usual from Nightdive. I mean it's "Quake" what more can be said that isn't said already. Otherwise this would get a 5/5 if it weren't for the "DRM" crap forced into it (same with the Doom games). And yet again... drop the DRM completely and just add the mods into all these games instead!!

After promising that owners of quake on gog would get the remastered edition that steam users got for free, its been 6 months and still nothing.
