Quake

What took me by surprise when playing Quake for the first time was how well the game has stood the test of time, something not many concurrent games of the time have done gracefully. The gothic architecture and creepy atmosphere is something that's yet to be replicated in any FPS since. Like with any good id Software game, the arsenal is a joy to use, enemies come in all different flavors and require diffferent tactics to bring down. The only real knock on the game is the disappointing lack of bossfights - just two, one at the end of the first episode and the final boss.

I've been having a blast playing through the campaign. Sadly though, the game doesn't feel complete, as the soundtrack is missing. Or, it's not missing per se, as the files are there, but you need to mount an ISO image and play it from there, as it doesn't work in the game due to licensing issues, which is just the worst... I found out after I bought the game, and it saddened me. The soundtrack was amazing. Nine Inch Nails rocked the hell out of it. You can however go on youtube and search for the soundtrack, and fire it up whenever you want to play. It works perfectly like that. Really sets the mood. The game really shines in multiplayer, obviously, but it only supports LAN games, so I haven't been able to play any of those. I'd still recommend the heck out of this game. If for nothing else, than the glorious hours you'll spend mowing down monsters as you blast through levels. It's scary how much of the map layouts I still remember, all these years later. I've deducted a star due to the missing soundtrack.

I always was a fan of Doom and Heretic, so i'm glad that i gived this game a shot, it's very polished for it's time and fun as hell. PS: Skip the part when the guy asks you to de-emphasis the soundtrack - as this dude said in one of the top comments of the video: "Ummm... just in regards to "de-emphisizing" the audio, I am guessing you are not at all familiar with Trent Reznor's work. Trent's work on Quake and also Nine Inch Nails around that time was very metallic, harsh and bright. It is meant to sound that way and what you did to the audio just makes the audio quality worse in my opinion." And have fun!

I first played Quake on a Macintosh PowerPC in my middle school homeroom in 1996. Instantly hooked. Never had a copy of my own til now, and I'm so happy I do. I've seen a couple reviews saying that the game doesn't include the soundtrack, which simply isn't true; it's just kinda hidden; the discs are included with the install for Quake and the expansions. The only issue I've encountered so far is that the proper MS-DOS version has some speed issues in DOSBox that I can't seem to alleviate, but WinQuake and GLQuake run flawlessly under even Windows 10, so good on ya, GOG! I love this game, and it's soo good to have my own copy :D Thanks for The Offering ;)

The name of this game alone says it all: it's the definitive game that brought shooters to a new era of 3-dimensional gameplay and graphcis. It took the formula established by Doom and brought it to a whole new level of online play and mods, with a legacy that reverberates even today. It doesn't have the most fulfilling story but the environment and theme carries such a weight that you can't help but feel immersed in the twisted and dark world of horrendous creatures. The aesthetic of this game makes it timeless, unique and a cult classic. Before you buy, keep in mind there's a few things to notice here. First, it doesn't have the Nine Inch Nails OST but you can find it online. Second, this version comes with an outdated engine but you can download Quakespasm and run on modern systems. And third, this is the original campaing, meaning that you won't get the other two expansion packs. However, if you are a Quake fan, buy it so you can own an original copy of this game. The modding community is still very active and there's a ton of community content for anyone to enjoy, specially with Arcane Dimensions.
