Another Nightdive hit!
After Quake Enhanced, Nightdive studios nailed another cool remaster! Having a new episode AND porting Quake 2 64 is a wonderful bonus, kudos for handing it out for free to Quake 2 owners. I'd gladly pay for this, though, it's a wonderful remaster. I mean, the guns finally even have muzzle flashes!

Quake II is a masterpice by id and still popular after 25 years. Now brilliantly updated by Nightdive Studios. Existing owners received enchanced edition for FREE! For ~15usd u got ton of content. Every official campaing ever made. Improved graphics and AI Multiplayer with crossplay and accessibility options Optional gameplay improvements Its worth it. Buy Quake II right nowwwww!!! With the new update!
It's got music, its got visuals, its got a compass. The helpful compass points the way so you won't get lost hopefully. That was in my opinion the biggest problem with this game, which might be why it took me 20 years to finally finish it. It's fun, challenging, and gets better the further in to it you get.

Fond memories
I have pleasant memories of playing Quake 2 (single player) a long time ago, even though I was never really good at FPS games. I replayed it recently, and realized that I'm still not that good at FPS games, but I still had fun. I love the atmosphere of this game and the "one foot after the other" vibe of the campaign progression. Sure, there are level loads, but you never feel like you're skipping anything, and you can trace a clear path from the start to the end of the campaign. I especially like the little "briefings" between the major levels, showing how you move from one area to the other. I can't speak on the mechanics, because I'm not a really knowledgeable old school FPS player, but I will say that I'm happy the game has different cheats. Quake 2, as well as the first one, is an acquired taste, I think. If you have never played it, you will likely bounce off of it quickly, unless you have a specific reason for playing it: completing the series, reviewing the game, or getting a sense of the historical evolution of the genre, are all valid reasons to try this one.

An excellent remaster
The remastered version of Quake 2 comes with every campaign ever made for the game and then some. The graphics look way better than the original, the enemy AI was improved and there are lot of quality of life features added. I absolutely love the addition of muzzle flashes and hitmarkers, it makes the gunplay feel so much better! The inventory and weapon wheels are also very handy, making item management less clunky. The only missed opportunity here I feel was the inclusion of a true centered weapon option, with model rather than making the gun invisible when 'centered'. Also, the new Berserker ground pound area of effect is a bit too large if you ask me, I was rarely able to avoid the damage when dodging it. For the multiplayer I love that they added crossplay and that nifty voice chat reader. I had way more fun than I was expecting while playing it. Well done Nightdive, you guys truly are the kings of remasters!
