Great throwback to old times - as is the case with most of these kind of throwback games they've added a few tweaks - few customisation skills, lives, but it doesnt really detract from the overall experience of that glorious shooty shooty bang bang.
It's hard to critique this - it's not a perfect game - but they've clearly put a lot of work into this and for the effort invested, and the experience of the final product, it's well worth a purchase.
The game starts off as a generic Doom/Hexen clone but evolves into so much more.
The game incorporates upgrade paths and skillincreases that evolves with your own playstyle. Furthermore the level select system puts a moden spin to the classic 2d shooter concept.
Project Warlock can be played exactly as you choose, melee, magic or guns it's all up to you as a player. The leveldesign is amazing and it forces you to always look behind you after progressing as some items spawns enemies. If you're an advanced player you can always rush the maps to increase the difficulty or you can take your time and bait enemies when low on ammo. Combine the modern elements with a classic, dark themed fast paced shooter you get an absolutely thrilling experience that everyone can enjoy.
I don't own the game yet but I've played it
here's the good
-satisfiying gunplay
-beatiful sprites and enviroments,
-E2 is pretty original, there have been very few games with missions in antartica bases, and even fewer inspired by the masterpiece that was The Thing, a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one
-good music
-weapon upgrades are varied, you got 2 choices that change how they work
the bad:
-lightning, the game sometimes is PITCH BLACK, it needs work I knew there is a light spell, but it's a band aid to an exposed fracture, this is one the game's biggest problems and needs to be addressed.
-E3 is bland, E1 and 4 arent much better but I feel like medieval castles and industrial themes dont get old as much
-weapon upgrades lack full descriptions, some things in the weapons change that you didnt know would change, like accuracy
-different sprites for HP and mana depending on the episode, this is an interesting idea and I appreciate the sentiment but universal sprites would have been better
-upgrade points take a while to accumulate, you'll get 2 by average per mission.
-strenght stat is pretty useless, you'll ditch melee by E2, weapons that got bonus damage from strenght would have been good, like bows, chainsaw, etc
-some sprites are on the simple side
-spells are kinda boring so far, its better to invest in guns than magic, since magic takes a while to get good
there's a lot of potential here and I wish the devs nothing but the best!
Unlike a lot of Indie games I've taken a chance on; this game is exactly what it presents itself as. If you played and enjoyed the old Doom and it's many clones you're gonna feel right at home here. It feels just like those games with the added RPG elements like attributes, perks, weapon upgrades and so forth. These elements make the game more interesting without being terribly complex or distracting from the action so a nice addition. Overall the game is a smooth, fast-moving, action-packed stress killer.
