Nice surprise

I have to say I was really surprised by this game. I played the original Prey, havent't watched any gameplays from this one but I knew the game isn't related story wise. I somewhat expected it to be a shooter with a gameplay similar to the old one. I liked Bioshock and Deus Ex so this was a pleasant surprise. The story is cool, I like the setting and the style of the station. The low grav serctions are an interesting addition. What I did not like very much was the gunplay. In the beginning, without neuromods, you are super slow, there are little guns and ammo is scarce. Sneaking past enemies didn't work well for me. Using turrets against them works in a limited fashion since most annoying enemies just rip them to shreds in no time and you end up using you precious ammo. Great game overall, I higly recommend it.

System Shock 2.5

This game lives and breathers System Shock 2, it even has some more or less hidden references (i.e. Looking Glass, the lift being stuck in the aboretum), so I think it's a crime that the publisher changed the title.In many ways, Prey is a bit too close to SS2 for my tastes. It seems like the developers wanted it to feel the same and neglected their own ideas over it. However, it's not SS2. It starts out as bleak, but the atmosphere loosens up quite a bit halfway through. The game mechanics are well thought through. It matters a lot, what abilities you learn. Upgrading you jumping ability and using jetpack upgrades makes you able to glide through the levels to the point you can almost fly. Investing learning alien abilities can make everything much more tedious because security turrets start attacking you. There is a lot of room of different playstyles. An equal amount of thought was put into the equipment. Weapons that seem useless show their true potential when upgraded, while the more conventional arms can be severly lacking in the late game. Granades can be used in creative ways. All this can impact the difficulty of your playthrough. I found this a bit problematic, because it's easy to find exploits and render a challenging game too easy. The environments are fairly big, varied and stylish. The pseudo open world design, though, is the biggest flaw of the game in my opinion: Quest markers often lead you astray and in the late game you get overwhelmed with fetch quest after fetch quest. Traversing the ship quickly is the weakest point of the game, as it means you may have four or five load screens after another. The hectic late game with lackluster enemies combined with weak endings ruined the game a bit for me. It's absolutely great in the beginning to the middle, but feels severly rushed at its closure. But the overal experience is defenitely worth 4 out of 5 stars.

Very well done! You won't need a map!

Well, I just had "lets play something I already have on my pile". What a pleasant surprise! The levels are very well done - my sense of orientation is not the best, but in this game I don't need a map for orientation. A rare case. The game-play is FPS+story unfolding. You come back to areas you've been quite often, but it does not feel like a chore. You get new abilities allowing you to unlock areas which were hidden when you got there the first time. You have several way to unlock them - strong? remove the boxes. Hacker? Throw a "Recycler bomb" to remove them - gives you some materials too. Jump-climb style? Do it. You don't have to do endless grinding (hello "The Surge!"). You can do the tank playing style, or my preference: Slow, silent and deadly. But an important hint for the graphics: First adjust them in the normal menu the way you like. Then open "%USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\Arkane Studios\Prey\game.cfg" (copy paste into start -> run or explorer). Add: r_MotionBlur = 0 r_Sharpening = 0.50 r_ChromaticAberration = 0 r_HDRGrainAmount = 0 r_HDRBloomRatio = 0 r_MotionBlurCameraMotionScale = 0.0 and set it read-only, else the game might kill your options when you enter the options menu. Kills motion blur, color fringe, useless grain and exaggerated bloom.

Really good - blown away

Just finished the game. I am an older player who likes a good storyline in games like these. IMHO, Prey has a great story. When I was younger, I enyoyed playing System Shock. Prey is much alike System Shock, but with waaay better graphics, better game mechanics, bigger levels, better sound / music, and so on. As a sciense fiction fan, most I liked is the shere size of the space station. If my estimation is correct, it is about 700 to 800 meter in length. Sounds miniscule in comparison to other games having space stations multiple kilometers big. But here the proportions are correct. Flying in your suit outside the station lets you feel lie a fly buzzing around a van - well done. Levels are designed good and interconected good. You really have the impression being in a huge space station. The story is beautyful and I completed almost all optional quests. You can not go rambo in this game like in Doom or Serious Sam. Although I also like these type of games. Reduce your O2 supply to brain, grab your controller, pump up the volume, and let hails of bullets rain on the army of opponents rushing to you until you begin to giggle. This game is different. You have to find out how to take out the opponents best. I spent my neuromods mostly on human abilities and 4 Typhon abilites. And it worked like a charm. Tip: Make use of 'Combat Focus' often. The story got me hooked and I enyoied it up to the end. One of the games I watched the credits after finishing with a 'WOW' feeling. Very very nice. Technically, I had no problems, nor glitches, or any kind of crashes.
