Walks like Banished, Talks like Banished

I've seen a lot of word of mouth describing Patron as a 'Banished Clone'. It's not Banished. It's Anno. Patron certainly takes a lot of things from Banished, but the dev team either didn't know why Banished did them, or only did so because they liked the look and feel. I can't list all the things I've seen so far with only 2,000 characters, so here's an example of how the Banished ideas are implemented in Patron: Building in Banished is something you need to consider. The game heavily emphasizes logistics and travel time. So when you place a building one (or more) sides are flagged as 'road access' with small arrows on the placement 'ghost'. Those mean you can't overlap with another building, but *can* put a road there. Great for planning how people will get in and out of areas. Patron *also* has those small arrows. For no reason whatsoever. Access isn't determined that way, nor can you build roads on those squares. Every building comes pre-wrapped with a small access road. And roads don't seem to really matter anyway, because as far as I can tell people live at their jobsite. And the game is filled with that sort of "But why tho?" Things like warehouse inventory that can't be filtered or sorted, and doesn't auto-hide things you don't have. Want to sell excess firewood at the port? Scroll down to until you figure out where it is *every time*, because you can't set an auto-sell order. Otherwise? It's a poor man's Anno. And it's hurt by what it does borrow fully from Banished. Patron does model Banished's population growth fairly well, but even slower. Most of my time on x10 speed is spent waiting for the next generation of teenagers to become adults so I can quickly jam them into whatever job type I've just unlocked, and then back to waiting. In summary: Don't expect Banished, but do expect the influences of Banished to grate against your expectations of Anno.

Banished like but without the salt of it

So...Patron is not a bad game, it could be even a good one if you are new to city builder. Good points are: -Some concept are easier than in Banished, and sometime its confortable. BUT this is also a downside. (See later) - Looks like there is more of an endgame than Banished, so you will have pretty building and good stuff to decorate. - Decent graphic, that said I dont know why they felt the need to write the title of each building on them. - Fast evolution...but... - Management of workers is far ahead of Banished even though its not perfect. Cons : - ...So it takes a lot from banished. But as someone else said, Patron seems it doesnt know why Banished dev used them. Patron want to be more accessible and by make most of the system easier it just make the game boring. Worker doesnt seems to care if their job is far away, depot are shared virtual spare that you will build just to reduce ressource travel time or increase depot max capability, Food is rather easy to get. Of course not all buildings are unlock, so you will need researches. But researches are mainly unlock with gold, gold that you will have from taxes, and so its all come back to "time". So you have to just wait to have gold, to unlock a research, to build the new fancy building and access the next research. Its all so linear. And you get bored. The core game mechanics are just to easy and linear. Its fun at the beginning but once you realise... - UI is sometime ok, but mostly not that intuitive. I also feel we do not have enough details and / or control on the stats and overview. - For some reason, I have to rebind my custom keybinding at every start of the game. Its kindda annoying even though Im sure it will be fixed. I think Patron suffer from not knowing what it wants to be. It could have been a more evolve Banished, even with easier systems, but it all end up being a city builder that will only ask you to wait to build the next building.

Promising, but feels like early access

There's no way to cancel a structure once it's been misplaced without demolishing the non existent structure for partial resources and building priority means very little since they will complete the nearest buildings first regardless. Combine these two and you can end up with resources tied to the wrong unfinished building with no way to reclaim them. They will sometimes walk up to a building and walk away despite having more than enough resources to complete it in storage, leaving everyone to starve as your docks sit at 17/50 wood with 80 in stock. Also, you can't move a miner to the mine you want without disabling the other mine even though there is a button to do so, it just keeps moving back. Granted, this was just from the demo I played, but a few little things like that have me waiting to hear if it's been addressed by a patch before I'll try the full game.

A lot of bugs, they shouldn't came out with this version, they need to adjust a lot of things, don't buy it until the fix all the errors.

These city builder games are right up my street. This particular game is still a bit rough around the edges. CTD happens around once an hour ; had a weird crash in year 2 where happiness for one of my households fell to -1.2 million or so and a save and reload did not help. Best to save regularly and often to avoid disappointment. More mouse-over hints would be useful as would some sort of programmable automatic trading interface. "Construction Priority" could actually mean construction priority, although the manual does give fair warning that nothing in this game happens instantly. Make haste, but do it slowly. Maybe charge extra for those "urgent" jobs. Once past year five your city will be well established and even though random events can still hit hard the game gets easier as you go on. An occasional heavy earthquake might shake things up a bit. Overall Patron is a good game, even if the code needs much more.work. Keeping all of the households happy all of the time is difficult but easier with replay. Maybe Patron will end up as something like Rimworld,, a game to keep parked on the computer and to play from time to time. Three patches already since I bought this game, so the developers are definitely paying attention and I wish them every success. I can recommend Patron almost without reservation--it *will* get better.
