+ Nice graphics, good music.
- Terrible writing througout, bland NPCs
If you're absolutely starving for a CRPG this is still safe to skip. Time is finite and there are better stories out there.
Compared to Kingmaker the characters are awkward and poorly written. Most Lawful or Evil dialog options make you seem idiotic, petty, or just plain wasteful. The tactical battle system is so bare bones as to be painful to utilize and horribly unbalanced.
But at least the core party gameplay is still there. But again a lot of encounters are balanced for an EPIC party, even early on when you're still level 5-6. Always fun to face down an enemy that can drop any character in your party in a single round, every round. Hands down the first RPG that seems to think save scumming should be part of the designed gameplay.
I have a lot of experience with these sorts of games, and the systems overall are quite familiar. This thing needs a serious balance pass.
The game is good, with many issues, but still worth playing if you have the time.
- This is a VERY large game with A LOT of stuff and the quality of the content is uneven. It's never awful, but very rarely amazing, most of it is just ok with a highlight every now and then.
- A number of feats, classes, items, spells etc either don't work as they should, don't work as they're described or don't work at all.
- The HoMM sidegame and crusade managment are for the most part tedious, not fun and distract from the RPG part. Even the kingdom managment in Kingmaker was better.
Waaay too many bugs for release date. Equip bugs, trader bugs, interaction bugs. I've only just started playing and this is what I've already run into. These bugs are encountered through NORMAL playing, too.. How the heck did these get past game testing? Or do they even test their own games? The writing leaves a whole lot to be desired, too. It seems like they were more interested in pushing anti-stereotypes than writing a story you could actually get immersed in. If you liked Kingmaker's gameplay, you'll like this gameplay, though, because it's the exact same with more classes and stuff like that. I'll keep playing through because I do like the game mechanics, but dang are these bugs frustrating, and dang is it hard to get invested in a story with such poorly written characters.
Does this game have some great elements in it? Yes, of course.
Can it satisfy most goody goody players, yes.
Do they give you the illusion of being able to play a believeble evil aligned character? maybe just the illusion of it. the worst 5y old child's magic trick type of illusion, but ya.
As it stands, with all the bugs, inconsistent voice acting or lack there of, horible Evil aligned dialog options/basic reactivity from the world to your actions, I can't give it a higher score.
I wanted to love it, cherish it, adore it, but it just let me down in some many way.
But like I said, if you enjoy playing only good characters, save the world type of heroes, never have a deeper more interesing motivation than "I'm good, cause" type of characters, and never experience deeper reasoning behing evil actions other than "I'm evil, I kill all for no reason", then this is the game for you!
