If you love D&D/Pathfinder and a good cRPG in the likes of Baldur's Gate, this game is for you. The game has some annoying bugs and it's very text-heavy (way more than Kingmaker), but honestly this is nothing comparing with how imersive, fun, and complete cRPG experience this game is.
This is the game. This is the last step in all of the crpg line, from Bard's Tale through Baldurs Gate to Divinities - this game has it all.
Amazing base system with Pathfinder
Ton of customization for characters and builds
Amount of story choices you have is both extremely diverse with opposing fronts and extremely deep, with your story going on and on with your choices
Great main story which is fueled by your own motivation
Great and diverse side quests
Absolutely amazing writing and characters you will remember
Great art design, a ton of biomes and areas
Only faults - game can be bit buggy which can be solved with mods, and the Heroes of Might And Magic strategy side can be mediocre (but again, can be disabled or made easy)
This game carries the quintessential DNA dating back to Infinity legends like Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale and Torment. Properly updated, with great story, complex builds and plenty of gameplay.
While difficulty balancing could be improved, the many options mitigate this downside.
UI is just bad, especially combat UI. Turn based mod is not very good (especially after BG3 and Solasta, the latter is comparable to this game in many ways and is just much better at the UI and combat). Real time combat is kind of a bland and nothing really has any real impact until an enemy suddenly 'pops' like in turn based mode, lol. On top of this the dialog and story are just not good, or even mediocre, its cringy bad a lot of time. And it is obvious why, same issue DAV had and why that games story and dialog are terrible. Lucky I got this on the 90 percent off sale, I doubt I will play much more.
The mark of a great sequel is that it makes the original unplayable. Wrath of the Righteous does this for me in every respect compared to Kingmaker.
First off, Wrath is a separate campaign to Kingmaker so it isn't technically a sequel, but it has so many of the same elements (sprawling narrative, building mechanics, choices and consequences) that the comparison can't help but be made.
The major difference between the two is epicness. Kingmaker was all about building a kingdom and surviving intrigue. Wrath pulls from the PnP campaign module and breaks the standard game rules with glee. Rather than being an adventurer, you're a fledgling demigod that can become an unholy lich, an angel, a time-traveling aeon, or anything else. This plays true to the original campaign in focusing on Mythic energy and laughing at standard limitations. Limited Rage? Normal Spells? Dying? Forget those, we're going to steer into the insanity and laugh the whole way there.
There are some familiar beats here in being able to build areas up, but they are fortresses instead of settlements, and babysitting them and managing the Fifth Crusade is nowhere near as laborious as it was in Kingmaker. Big plus there. The Crusade itself, managing the armies and generals, will be an acquired taste to some. I'm not a fan of how central Owlcat made it, making it an all-or-nothing shindig that you either grind through and get good at, or switch off and feel like you're missing out on part of the experience, but that was probably the point.
This is a solid 4 stars, however, because while I admire the ambition of the devs and the scale of their project, that also means bugs and instability. Some areas are solid as bedrock, but others had me save-scumming between disarming traps between the six mandatory CtDs every time I went to the same place.
Definitely an epic title, worth the entrance fee or, if bugs bother you, waiting until it's in a polished state. But don't ignore this one - it's pretty epic.
