I backed the game on kickstarter as I love Kingmaker and the Pathfinder system.
I just played the first few minutes (!) and want to share my experience so far.
-The game runs fine on my not so highend system. The graphics are pretty nice.
-The intro scene is impressive.
-The voice acting is very good so far, character design is superb.
-The story is interesting so far, the setting is nice.
-The camera somehow always is either a bit too close or a bit too far away.
-The tutorial nicely integrates into the gameplay.
-Pathinder offers a lot of options and rules and backstory. It is very hard to follow every detail. But I think the game does a good job here.
Thumbs up!
I have a rig that breezes the game requirements. All the files seem to be in order upon installation. And yet I can't even arrive to the main menu UI as I get stuck on a perma load upon booting the game. I have no in-game experience. Nothing. I have managed to find some reports using google that show EA users had this problem in early May. How this has not been addressed is beyond me. Very disappointing. I don't like to leave reviews as a rule but this is quite literally unplayable as it stands now.
If you loved BG3, but found it a bit too easy, a bit too thin in terms of content (lol) and like to read, then WotR will be your Game!
First Playthrough was around 150hours, but I took my time. Multiple Playthroughs are very recommended, because of the different Paths your Character can Progress. Be it becoming a Legen, an Angel. a Demon or a literal Manifestation of the Universes Order, the possibilities are incredible.
Played it turn-based and had a great time. Not as polished as BG3, but for the Price, you get a great value!
The good part:
Baldur's Gate(1998) - Dragon age(2009) - WOTR(2021)
Yes is that good, epic story meaningful choices allover the place it really feels like you are shaping your own char your own adventure, great quests for the most part and interesting npc/companion.
Very nice maps, need to praise the art design in some dungeons really impressed by that.
So what is wrong? This amazing CRPG is buried under too many unpleasant "facts":
- alot of bugs, some critical if you like turn base, wich is the way to go in rpgs imo.
Alot of good people, backers and whatnot made alpha and beta testing for you and still the game was quite a mess and only now is slowly starting to work as intended come on Owlcat :\
- Crusade mode is way less annoying then kingdom management was in the previus pathfinder, but it still is 'in the way' so to speak.... I mean it start like a minor minigame distraction but later you are forced to play it to progress with good part of the game which is questing.
Loading times are much better, but still one menu to move the army another one to manage the political side of it plus move reinforcement here move main army there....really feels like a waste of time is not compelling and actually detrimental to the adventuring climax the rest of the set up so nicely.
- some of the worst puzzels I've ever seen, where is the logic in some of those? no idea and even if there is one it becomes impossible to find out since you made the simbols needed to solv it so tiny I'll need true seeing IRL to catch the difference between them ffs!
I've played many games that had flawed gameplay but the story still carried it. This is not one of them.
THE VISUALS: surprisingly good, even though this is a full 3d game. Weapons, armor, character models don't look horrible.
THE GAMEPLAY: baffling. Confusing UI - with a ruleset as complex as Pathfinder 1.0 perhaps a lot more thought could go into the UI. There's too much happening and too many time-dependent events, too many mind-affecting spells, and a terrible implementation of RTwP. I don't know if a companion AI editor exists - it was a feature in Infinity Engine/Obsidian games, but apparently the default caster build in this game is with a crossbow so they don't run into an army of enemies with their staves and wands and get themselves killed. Seems like the developers tried to cram as many features as they could into the game without taking the time to streamline them. This is a game that would benefit from turn-based combat and better designed encounters.
THE STORY: without going into spoilers, this is fanfic level stuff, characters having tantrums in the middle of a war council, the pacing of mythic choices being all over the place, and the overall plot is the quality of an average homemade tabletop campaign. I understand it is hard to retain focus with a game of this scale, but maybe scaling the game back a little would be a better idea.
THE BOTTOM LINE: Wrath of the Righteous is a game where the ambitions of the developers far exceeded their skill at making a game. I genuinely tried to like this game, but by the end of Act 2 I was essentially sleepwalking from one objective to the other and knew it was time to stop and let go of it, rather than waste more hours at something I clearly was not enjoying.
