One of the best coversions of boardgame strategy to computer. Great AI. Would play for hours in my youth. Now 78 years young

Good Fun!
I first played this in around 1997 and loved it. Recently I added it on GOG and realised that, as one player remarked, it is a puzzle game and very satisfying to play. Though the hex concept seems dated, it beats later versions (3D) hands down. It does not matter how often one plays, the PC player is never entirely predictable and offers some surprises. A single scenario takes around 30mins to an hour to complete, the campaigns making continuity as you develop the army that you want. Turns out, it is possible to manage all the campaigns without losing a single unit, (except ships and blockhouses, but they are not counted!) though sometimes you must aim for the ones where the extra weaker units can be protected by airpower. A few tactical notes. Upgrading units is not worth it unless they are 3 bars of XP+. Better to sell them and get better equipment, it's cheaper by around 30-50%. This means a few core units are stuck with, the rest are disposed of and, an army to suit the scenario is built instead. Often it is better to wait (Savannah in particular) as the enemy expends effort to attack blindly. Then have plenty of fast units to exploit the weakness of the AI. Pick units that are just good enough! King Tigers are great, but Tigers are enough for most attacks. Stukas are the best all round for the Germans and the mid-range bombers are great for the Americans. The British just need loads of Fireflys to hammer away and then, I never repair units, they just tag along and take the objectives when the healthy ones have taken out the opposition. The negatives are really almost insignificant. The music has no off button, it is always there. Occasionally there is a graphics glitch that leaves a previously positioned unit in place as part of the map! has occasionally misled me into thinking that a gap in my line was filled! On the positive side, this is great fun to play and really quite absorbing, I am still figuring better ways to win and gain unit XP! Love it...

Just as good as I remember
I loved playing this game 30 years ago. This package runs well. It does crash upon occasion so make sure you have multiple saves going.
