I created a new tag for this game

I used to say that the day when I'll beat the Outlast games will be the day when I'll know that I've faced and defeated my worst fears. Well, I have to say that Outlast 2 was a very disappointing experience for me. To put it bluntly: story mode is no story mode at all, too much chasing, too much dying, too little was done with an otherwise good story. Did I say too much chasing? It could have been so good, they had all the elements. There could have been more things to find, more terrifying lore, more visual storytelling, and waaaay less chasing. It's almost like the creators went out of their way to avoid having their game labelled "walking simulator". "Let's just never give the player a breather so they can take in their surroundings and the lore they find, let's just chase them until they lose their will to live and end up dying without realizing what is really going on here." I'm sorry, I am very disappointed. Oh well, maybe I'll get back to it one day, when I'll feel more willing to put up with it. But, until then, it'll proudly display the new tag it inspired me to create: RAGE QUIT.

Good bits, bad bits

Generally good graphics, and some effective and creepy understated sneaking, especially near the start. I liked the way you carry and check a couple of pockets' worth of batteries and bandages. As the game wore on I got a bit more impatient with it though: - The story made little sense (unless you read loads of pages of writing, which it sometimes isn't safe to do so). - Some of the "horror" was childish overblown gore and silliness, which actually made it less scary. - It feels very linear and scripted. The same enemies seem to pop up at the same bits, often with only one way out of it, so you keep dying until you find that one route. - It keeps jumping into a cliched school scene with repetitive rooms and corridors. The game would have been better doing away with those scenes completely. They also generally meant you were suddenly dropped into a new and unconnected area on return, making the adventure seem disconnected. - It is always night time. And a very dark one too. - Camera batteries run out ridiculously quickly. With a bit more openness and a few more options (and dropping the school) and this would have been a pretty good game, like Resident Evil 4 without guns.

A horror masterpiece

What makes Outlast 2 a really terrifying game is the fact that it combines elements taken directly from real life (sexual abuse, suicide, religious fanaticism) in a very compelling and disturbing way. You're not gonna find here zombies, alien monsters or butcher-knife wielding nurses, what you are going to find is real-life madness, and that's scarier than any other fantasy/horror tale.
