In the remote mountains of Colorado, horrors wait inside Mount Massive Asylum. A long-abandoned home for the mentally ill, recently re-opened by the “research and charity” branch of the transnational Murkoff Corporation, the asylum has been operating in strict secrecy… until now.

Very enjoyable horror game

Most of the other reviews cover the game well. I knew roughly what to expect as I'd watched part playthroughs on youtube when the game was first launched. As it's now been a while I bought it at the Halloween sale as it was a bargain price. Whilst I don't find horror games scary, this one actually made me jump at least once, so if you've got a tendancy to jump, scream when something pops out at you then at least increase this amount 5x. During the chase scenes, if the path wasn't obvious then I could feel myself tensing up as I was furiously looking for the way out, but these situations were fairly infrequent due to remembering rooms with lockers in or very dark corners to hide in for a brief moment. Nice twist at the end

No Amnesia, but...

A lot of people say this game is scarier than Amnesia:Dark Descent. While I completely disagree with that, Outlast is still a fun rollercoaster ride. Where Amnesia is more tension, Outlast is more jump scares. Not that that is bad, just not the type of horror that scares me more. Its a matter of preference really. If you enjoy things jumping out and going BOOGA BOOGA. Buy this game right now. If you like more psychological horror, you should still get this since its pretty fun, just know what you are getting into.

Good but short horror game

This game has an interesting setting, and starts out great. The atmosphere is tense and not relies on too many jump-scares. Your feeling of helplessness is downright terrifying in some points, almost like in Amnesia. Although, this tension is loosen from the middle of the game, where the frightening hide and seek turns into a running marathon, where you have to figure out where to go on the spot, or you die. This is more frustrating than scary. In addition, the game is rather short, you can finish it under 5 hours for the first playthrough. The game is fully linear, so the replay value suffers a lot, too. Nonetheless, Outlast definitely worths a playthrough for any horror fan, pick it up when its on sale.
