Outcast 1.1 has been recompiled from the original source code and improved to run smoothly on today's computers. The main improvements compared to the original version are: multithreaded voxel renderer for higher performances, software bilinear filtering on polygonal meshes, part of the HUD redesigned to match higher resolutions, new high-resolution sky paintings, new launcher, native support of xbox gamepad, user-friendly controller configuration, a lot of bugs fixed and improved stability.
Please note: Outcast Classic remains available for download as a bonus goodie.
As part of a covert experiment, the US military deployed a probe designed to prove the existence of a parallel universe hidden from our own. Although the probe successfully entered the alternate universe and reached a planet called Adelpha, its first crucial data transmission is mysteriously cut short.
The probe's unexpected demise triggers a disastrous chain of events resulting in the creation of a black hole, one that threatens to destroy the Earth. Unless the missing probe can somehow be found and repaired, planet Earth itself is doomed.
Vast and diverse continents to explore, inhabited by thousands of living creatures
An excellent mix of action and adventure, well-designed combat and complete freedom of movement
One of the best games of 1999 with a memorable and believable storyline set in the not-so-distant future

First, before starting playing apply one of the existing patches that let you play Outcast at full screen. Once done this, you will be rewarded with an impressive game: excellent graphics (considering it's 1999's!), brilliant ideas, great open-world setting, smart AI, interesting plot. In other words, an amazing gameplay, for a game that at the time was wastly underrated, but that even today shows its beauty. You just gotta play it. Thumbs up!
So Outcast, as you might have heard, is a rare gem amongst video games. It's a classic with a small but dedicated cult following, and nowhere near the commercial success and mainstream appreciation it deserves. To me it's probably my all-time most memorable gaming experience and the greatest game I've ever played - a game I'm still looking back to, even after 15 years, remembering my time with it with fondness.
Outcast was one of the first 3D action/adventure games to feature a non-linear open world that you could explore freely. There's an intriguing story, great-looking visuals (for its time), exploration and adventure, but most of all - for me - Outcast is about immersion. Starting from the first seconds after you launch the game, you're thrown into a strange new world, plunged straight into the deep end with no introductions or explanations. You wake up surrounded by strange-looking aliens, with no knowledge whatsoever about what you've gotten yourself into, and how or why did you get there. From that point on you're compelled to explore that beautiful alien world, curious about its inhabitants and intrigued to solve the mysteries that surround the world. Oh, and how you're ever going to get back home.
My local PC games magazine at the time could find no faults in the game, so the only negative point they could come up with was "that orange shirt". I think even the shirt looks nice.
This is absolutely fantastic gem of action adventure games.
Large partially open world is beautifull and interesting.
Engaging storyline, and freedom of play.
Shame, that this title has been forgotten and no one talks and writes about it's glory :)
I petitioned GOG to pickup this title about 2 years ago --something like that-- and it's is amazing to finally be able to experience this game again in full res. I can't say more than it's still one of the best games I ever played and that you should buy it.
Its certainly up there, and so ahead of its time
A nin linear great story and world to explore, immersion and great little touches.
I mean come on they were using depth of feild?! No one else even tried it till a full 10 years later.
So sad theres no OC2 but check out Open Outcast, i have hi hoped for the fan made sequel.
