The complete experience now also available here
Offworld Trading Company is a great real-time-strategy game designed by Soren Johnson of Civilization III, Civilization IV, and, most recently, Old World fame. A great RTS that focuses on economics rather than warfare, even if it does boiul down to spending most of your time looking at the sidebar on the left-hand side of the screen to watch numbers go up and down! The graphics are good: not realistic by any means, but clear and easy to read. Thanks to the solid and consistent art direction, the map is a joy to look at, even if ultimately it's not as important as those numbers on the left-hand side of the screen. I originally gave the game 1 star for the simple reason that it was missing a few pieces of DLC that were readily available elsewhere, and the game also wasn't receiving any further updates. It was, for all intents and purposes, abandoned here, and no explanation was given as to why. This does happen with games on GOG and it's always frustrating when it does. The fact that I pointed this stuff out in my original review was appreciated by customers, since my review was marked as "most helpful" on the store page. Recently, however, the missing DLC was added to GOG, and the version that is available here is now complete and, to the best of my knowledge, identical to what is offered on other platforms, including the latest updates. As a result, I have updated my review to reflect these changes. The game is a little older now and doesn't seem to receive any further updates of note, so I would recommend buying the game here if you want a DRM free copy of it and all the accompanying DLC. It took a few years, but this is now finally a finished, complete experience. I rate the game 4 out of 5 stars, because matches do tend to get a little samey, especially when playing against the AI. The campaigns are worth it for single player, though, especially when you pick different factions to play as. The differences between the factions are fairly subtle, as in Northgard, for example, but more important than you might at first suppose. The base game + all of the DLC offer endless amounts of fun.
