In a lush world of diabolical danger where everyone wants to eat you, you're the skinny guy with no weapons.
Run, jump, hide, scramble and talk your way past the ugliest bunch of carnivorous crustaceans ever created.
Unlock Abe's special powers, then figure out your foes, and you might save your race. Don't, and you're dinner!
Abe is a first class Mudokon floor-waxer for RuptureFarms. He was catapulted into a life of adventure when he overheard plans by his boss to turn all the Mudokons into Tasty Treats as part of a last-ditch in Molluck the Glukkon's meat-packing empire.
During his escape from RuptureFarms, Abe received a vision from the mysterious Big Face, showing Abe that he must not only rescue his fellow Mudokons, but also protect all of Oddworld's creatures from the predatory Magog Cartel.
Enter Oddworld's surreal sensory overload of pure gaming and claim your destiny. Saviour or salami? You decide.
The oddworld series feature some of the most unique settings in gaming history and this game started it all. It plays like a more sophisticated price of persia with great puzzles and a rescue mechanic that raises the difficulty and sense of reward. Should be in any gamers collection if they have an appreciation for classic platformers.
I've always loved Oddworld Inhabitant's games (which are pretty much limited to the Oddworld franchise, obviously), and this is no exception. Very intense game play, and the gamer must make countless decisions that effect the outcome of certain areas of the game. I'm looking forward to re-playing this game within the coming days =).
I must say that both Oddworld ABE'S Oddysee and Exoddus are brilliant masterpieces. They both really hit the puzzle/adventure genre perfectly when we follow our little friend "ABE" through his hard journey. It's really cool how you can sneak past sleeping sligs, or use shaddows to hide, and suddenly you have to run for your life, followed by hostile sligs or savage creatures. The only reason I liked the Exoddus aswell, is becouse it contained all from the Odysee plus some more. I can highly recomend both games, they're great!
Of my favorite side-scrollers, Abe's Oddysee, Out of this World, and Vice: Project Doom, keep swapping back and forth.
Abe's Oddsysee has an advantage over both of those games: I like the character.
We have all been situations where we are self-serving. Abe is simply trying to save himself from being eaten. In the process of doing so, however, Abe inadvertently becomes the chosen one of the Mudokons, and must embark on an adventure to save his kind. Despite Abe being an alien, I found his character extremely relatable and likable.
The gameplay is somewhat different than most side scrollers. Every one of your actions; every step, every jump, and every move must be deliberate and thought out. If you simply try and run to the end of a level, you most likely will be killed. The controls are a bit stiff, but nothing crippling, and I could always make Abe do what I needed him to do.
The atmosphere and environments are very well defined, and the game has a sense of humor. While the game is a little violent, I think most kids could play it without any emotional damage.
The game is very difficult, but you have unlimited lives, and you can save at any point.
I highly recommend this game to anyone who likes a good side-scroller.
I loved this game when it originally came out on PC. I am glad to see that GOG has it. It is not always easy to get your companions to follow you and not kill some of them, but that is the great challenge of this game. I crack up and mose of Abe's antics.
