The physics is the star!

In Noita (which is Finnish for witch) you are playing a... witch. You are able to fly for a short time, but without a broom. How? Just ask your girlfriend/wife how they do it when they hit the roof... Anyway, there's no room for a broom. You hold a maximum of four wands and the same amount of usable items. As this is a good tradition in rougelikes you have to figure out for yourself what everything does. Sometimes it is obvious, sometimes... what? Why am I a bee now? Your goal is to get down. Down, down, down. Somewhere down is the exit to the next world. Between every level you refresh your health (Necessary! Most welcome!) and you may buy spells to upgrade your wands. Furthermore you may choose one perk every time - obvious ones, useful ones and funny ones (get hit by a shotgun with the "low gravity" perk and see for yourself). All these are needed to progress through the dungeons. But the real star is the physics. Throw a bomb into water. Boom! The steam created by the explosion raises under the ceiling, condensates and drips back as water. Liquids flow realisticly down as long as there is a path - and accumulate again in hollows. Coal, oil and wood burn down with different speed. Avoid smoke bubbles as you can't breathe in them. Covering yourself in different liquids has the appropriate effect - water prevents you from getting on fire, while oil... lets you slip from that tiny overhang just in front of that big fricking shotgun of that angry mob. Alright, time to start over... again. This game is - though still in Early Access - already incredibly polished. I encountered only small bugs and one self inflicted crash (I fiddled with the options file). If you do like a mixture of Spelunky and a dash of Metroidvania with permadeth - spiced up with an advanced version of Crayon Physics then I recommend this game to you. It's real fun just for the game in between!

I just don't know

I got a very mixed feellings about Noita. I played almost 50 hours now. The engine is very nice and pixel-based physics works great (the creators hooked my with that). On the other side the game is very, very, very unbalanced and it makes everything in it's power to make you hate it - the enemies ALWAYS hits you (you always need to dodge). It doesn't matter where you are, they always after you and prioritize you and know where you are. Gold nuggets you're trying to obtain after killing them, are the only items which are disappearing from entire game and they are disappearing fast, so you need to risk to get it! The game has a huge amount of spells but the usefullness of most of them is questionable. Beside of spells, you also need to find a good wand and that's another problem. It's randomly generated. So during some runs I was unable to find a nice wand after three levels and on the other hand, different runs gave me TOO MUCH wands (as you got only 4 equipment slots and cannot edit them without perk). The perks system is weird and quite a lot of them (which should be the main 'helpers', during the painful process of going through the game) are not useful or useful only in very particular situations which are not happening often. On the other hand - I was able to roll few immunities in a row and was almost immortal. This is frustrating even if this is a "good run" (and I am almost immortal), because it just feels like beating the game is a matter of few coincidents. And... You're doing all of this without even a slightest clue WHY doing it. The game provides no lore (I read somewhere that there actually is some in the game, but NO, it's a lie - after almost 50 hours of playing, above 100 deaths, I still have to clue what I need to do or where I need to go, to finish the game). So, yeah. I know that's 'in development game' otherwise I would gave it at least one star less. If devs will balance the game, then it will be a 5 star experience.

Fun but hard.

I love Noita. I've been following the game ever since it was announced. It's an amazing feeling to experiment with all the spells and how they interact with the environment. In each run there is something new to explore, some new strategies to try out. And you either live long enough to become so powerful your own magic will kill you, or you get unlucky and die in the second map. However, the unfair difficulty of the game is the one thing I dislike. The enemies shoot with pinpoint accuracy which is a tad unfair. Your survivability also depends on how lucky you are to find new wands and spells rather than your own skill. But I will keep coming back to Noita for more, even if I die to something unfair in the first 10 minutes of the game because this game is fun!

Fun everywhere

This is an incredibly fun and addictive game. Physics is great, and there are so many possibilities. I just find out, that I can pour all the liquid out from a bottle, and fill it for example with water, so if I get ignited I can put the fire out. Which happens a lot. Amazing quality for an early access game, no crashes. Very hard sometimes, but keeps pulling me back with all the exploration, wand/spell experimentation and all the other fun stuff.

Masochist's delight

The physics aspect of the game is awesome, no question about it. The visuals, audio and music are also nice. But game mechanics are a different matter. The impact of randomness is enormous. You may be stuck with your puny starting weapon for a long time or you may find a magical equivalent of Kalashnikov machine gun early on. After each level you can select one new perk. What each perk does? There is one only way to find out - pick it. Sometimes perks have a downside and the wrong choice may ruin your run. But there is no way to know beforehand. Same goes for weapons. Here is a weapon that may kill the user, but we're not going to tell you. Enjoy your random death! On top of randomness and intentional obscurity, the basic combat is extremely unforgiving. Enemies have perfect aim and hit you hard. A seemingly minor mistake may end your run in less than a second. My last run ended with an enemy effectively oneshotting me from the edge of the screen even though I had full health. AOE attack that stunlocks you, not allowing to do anything before the second shot lands - that's not difficult, that's just unfair. Randomization and high difficulty are the standard features of many roguelites, I get it. But when compared to say Dead Cells (another roguelite) in terms of game mechanics, Noita looks bad. In Dead Cells, weapons are balanced and evenly spaced. When I die, I know it's my fault and I could've played better. Every new run is satisfying, while in Noita frustration is the only thing left when the novelty wears off. Noita is an example of a purposefully cruel game design. I can easily imagine the evil maniacal laughter of the devs during the design process. So buy it if either you don't mind paying the price just to look at cool physics simulation or dying to random nonsense is your definition of fun. Maybe you are more hardcore than me and a game that requires 200+ hours of suffering to achieve any sort of progress is exactly what you want.
