Get on sale for Darkness over Daggerford

Darkness over Daggerford was a cancelled premium module for Neverwinter Nights. The module was fully finished, but Atari cancelled it because they didn't want to take focus away from Neverwinter Nights 2. Instead of letting their hard work go to waste, Ossian Studios published the module for free. DoD is open world, has 35+ hours of content, over 60 sidequests, and an original music score. The enhanced edition adds voiceacting, new music, new portraits, new tilesets, and over 500 fixes. DoD is an excellent CRPG, the improvements are worth the price, and part of the sales go to Ossian Studios which has never recieved a penny for the original version.

Ambious but flawed

I tore into this game when it came out. After Baulder's Gate 2, I couldn't wait for BioWare's next epic. I mostly ignored multiplayer games, but Neverwinter Nights sported an uterly unique multiplayer / modding system that seemed directly targeted toward someone like me. The whole concept looked like the next logical step in BioWare's translation of D&D to computer RPGs. But the more I played, I felt a growing sense of disapointment. The single player campaign lacked Baldur's Gate's depth. Party interactions were one of the best features of the Infinity Engine games. Neverwinter Night's party system was drasticly simplified. Party characters came off as sketches. Party size was cut down too, but two more generic characters wouldn't have added much. The main storyline was a bit cliché, and the side quests weren't as interesting. The whole game lacked the grandure of the Infinity Engine games. The modular level system restricted the art design. The combat animations were a huge improvement, and the use of real 3D models rather than isometric perspective let you rotate the camera around and zoom in close to the fully animated (apart from faces) characters and world. But, there was a drabness to the whole game. It was still fun for the most part. I loved screwing around in the level editor, and had a few memorable campaigns with my friends. But, the parts of the game that mattered most were missing or scaled back. Of couse, this version is a pretty good deal: it has all the content, engine and asset improvements, and doesn't cost $50. It's a strange entery in BioWare's CV, but one woth having in your collection.

It's a great RPG

I have to say that I always wanted to play and finish this game. Basically since I purchased BG2 back in 2000/2001 and saw the NWN trailer. I didn't have chance as I gave up during the first game play, mainly focusing on aRPG or other story-based RPGs. After years of waiting and slacking, I finally gave it a try and went through the story. I think it's a great game. Yes, it's very old (even the EE version has old graphics), but it's still basically the same game. The only thing I need to say about this game is - what confused me - is that you don't have a party as the game was intended for multiple players first. But I like single and today (and even the years ago) it was harder to find other players. But the mods works, some online communities are still on so you can still enjoy the game.

Bland Burger topped with Kraft Single

I have no nostalgic pretenses, and I'm basing this purely on the game and not on the Enhanced Edition. The main campaign is notoriously dull, so I opted for the expansions. The fact that this game had such multiplayer potential is irrelevant, since the community is long past decline. I suppose that's a whole element which you may deeply enjoy, as a way to play DnD with your friends. Which brings up an important point: the way "parties" work. This is standard DnD adapted to CRPG. However, since you don't have a party (as in Baldur's Gate or Icewind Dale) but a tangentially controlled henchman, it takes out most of the strategizing and an unsung pillar of the "role-playing" aspect of DnD: playing your role for the party. At least for a lot of classes. That's forgivable, but this makes a chunk of the game repetitive and fluff for the padded dungeons, because the combat encounters go on and on, but that's a factor for most CRPGs. The anatomy of a DnD session is entirely different than sitting alone playing a CRPG, with turns being protracted affairs by comparison to the distillation of a CRPG, and that mingling with the lack of a party just makes that part of the game a grind. The story and conversations are fine enough, and that's where Neverwinter puts in some substance. At least beginning with a low level adventure and immersing you in the role of a simple adventurer is a fresh take in a genre awash with Chosen heros. It's a kind of generic I don't think the game should be criticized for, because genre conventions are something many enjoy and desire out of a Forgotten Realms game. A middling 5/10 is where I'd properly land my review. The entire experience, from the interface to the music, lacks the charm and atmosphere of other genre classics. In total, this is an unseasoned burger ground from a mediocre slab of meat, cooked with a Kraft single. You may not starve, but there's burger joints that'll give you a tasty burger with real cheese for the same charge.

Bit of an "OOF"

I bought the Deluxe Edition at release to support Beamdog, as I assumed they would roll out more optimizations, graphics options and other quality of life improvements to this old warhrorse. Ten months down the road and it's still a bit of a mess. Frametimes and stutter. Dropping frames during spell effects or too much action on screen. Bugs and glitches in Diamond still present. UI resizing is a blurry joke. The new render effects are nice looking, if subtle. Except for the Depth of Field which turns the entire game into a blurry mess. This version of the game has not crashed yet, that's a plus. Also, you need to buy the "Deluxe" edition to get all the DLC, which should be included out of the gate for an "enhanced" edition. And there is a lot of nickel-and-diming DLC modules. Still, you get a massive amount of content, and besides the paint-drying dullness of the base game, there's hundreds of hours of potential fun, more than that if you drag along a friend or two.
