Unravel the third chapter of the Myst saga, and embark on a desperate hunt through the Ages for an embittered villain whose vengeance threatens to eradicate an entire civilization.
Myst III: Exile continues the story of familial betrayal and timeless conflicts. Featuring 6 new awe-inspiring Ages explore and dozens of puzzles to solve as you search for the elusive villain Saavedro. Time is against you as you attempt to unravel his madness and reveal the dark secrets of the brothers Sirrus and Achenar.
Enjoy the six new worlds of Myst III: Exile, featuring a free-look movement system that allows you to view 360° at every location.
My appreciation of this game improved when I learned to view it not as a sequel to Riven, but as a re-iteration of the original Myst.
Similar level structure: a hub world that links to self contained puzzle worlds, each with their own distinctive style. Plot elements from the first game return as well.
Difference is that Myst 3 has much better graphics and larger levels.
One big quality of life update is the 360 degree view. Suprising how freeing that is.
All in all, if you like the original Myst, this is the prettier and bigger version of that.
It won't run on Windows due to the famous residualvm bug. It's not specific to the GOG release, happens to all. Found a solution in a forum:
Open the Start menu, search for or type “Command", right-click the Command Prompt shortcut ("Invite de Commandes" in French) , and select Run as Administrator.
Make sure the Command Prompt shows C:\Windows\system32>. If not, repeat step 1 as Administrator.
Type: sc config secdrv start= demand
(don't forget the space after the "=" sign)
You should see a message that the ChangeServiceConfig was successful. For those who have never used a Command Prompt, remember to press Enter after each new command.
**NOTE: You will get an error message at the next step if you don't type this command first**
4) Type: sc start secdrv
You should see a ten line message in table format showing "STATE: 4 RUNNING" on the third line.
When you have finished the gamed, you can do :
sc stop secdrv
sc config secdrv start= disabled
The game itself: Marvellous!
Strong acting during the several story encounters. Most of the game time is spent observing the environment and solving puzzles. As in the previous games, the game mechanics and logic of the worlds is shown to you early and later the player is left to figure out some great puzzles using the accumulated knowledge. You have to read everything carefully and to analyze each scene. The ages are very cleverly designed and you can truly feel in a fantastic otherwordly place.
Unfortunately two or three times there will be a puzzle, which doesn't hint where to start (for an example there is a lever, which can be pushed, but not obviously so. There is a lever, which can travel in a circular path, but it's movement is bugged - you have to try hard 40 times to hit some invisible path with mouse in order to push it). There is a free mouse look, which may cause nausea at certain places, since a lot of the scenes consist of very narrow paths.
