Long ago a computer scientist called Dr Sepulveda created a beautiful digital world existing entirely within a computer network of his own invention. This world was called Darwinia and it was inhabited by a peaceful, law-abiding digital life-form called the Darwinians. As the years wore on however the Darwinians became ever more aggressive and autonomous. They divided into factions, squabbling over Darwinia’s limited natural resources. Tribes began to roam the fractal voids hell bent on each other’s destruction, drunk on power and unswerving in the pursuit of world supremacy. Far and wide, they became known as the Multiwinians….

Hear me out here. Introversion is a great developer, but I feel that they really dropped the ball on this one. The idea was to make a multiplayer version of Darwinia, but Darwinia is, to me, a peaceful game. Something that can't be rushed. Multiplayer adds too much pressure to the experience for me.
It doesn't help that the UI is... problematic. It works, but only so much.
Finally, and this is the biggest issue. The game servers are all dead. Nobody plays this game anymore, and that's a pretty hard sell for a multiplayer title.
Those of you who already played Darwinia know what to expect. The rest of you... Buy it, and you're gonna get one of the best indie strategy games ever made. And just to make it clear, you CAN play it offline.
Bought it for LAN play, as their forums suggest it is capable of:

It's also recommended on other sites for its LAN abilities.
Turns out it can't do LAN without different keys. I would have bought a couple keys, but you can't on GOG. Not only is it blocked by DRM (something this site once shunned), but you cannot legally buy another copy for yourself to play with friends at all. There is no one online to play multiplayer with, so LAN would be this game's last foot. They cut it off with an online serial check.
Next it will be the servers that check authentication keys at all. Then no one will be able to play.
Most lobies are full or always empty, but playing with the AI is still a blast. forget rock-paper-scisors, we're throwing as many multiwinians at the problem until it goes away!
