Five hundred years ago, an ancient and well respected Shaolin fighting tournament, held every 50 years, was corrupted by an evil and elderly sorcerer by the name of Shang Tsung. Shang was accompanied by Prince Goro, a warrior of the Shokan race (a four-armed half-human / half-dragon). Knowing that if ten tournaments in a row were won by the Outworld champion, the Earth Realm would be conquered by evil and fall into darkness, Shang entered Goro in the tournament and had him defeat the great Kung Lao. Goro has been reigning supreme as the undefeated fighting champion for five hundred years now. As the last tournament required draws near, Raiden, Thunder God and protector of the Earth Realm, enacts a plan to tip the scales in the humans' favor, Seven fighters step into the arena on Shang Tsung's mysterious island: Shaolin warrior Liu Kang, Special Forces operative Sonya Blade, the mercenary thug Kano, fame-seeking actor Johnny Cage, the ice-wielding Lin Kuei warrior Sub-Zero and his undead adversary Scorpion, and Raiden himself.

This trilogy is the original PC port of all games which at the time where very decent ports considering what was possible on MSdos PC.
Mortal Kombat 1 and 2 use the ancient Adlib/synthetised instruments , 3 has CD audio music quality.
1 music was fine , 2 soundtrack on PC was bad but it does have the advantage of most home port of having the computer A.I cheat less often compared to the original Arcade game.
all of the game Run fine , Gameplay is very close to the arcade setting.
you might want to be using Anti-micro if Dosbox don't recognise your controller like it did with mine but otherwise this work pretty well.
Here is the gem. Here is what boys palyed amongst Street Fighter series to get inspired into martial arts, boxing, aikido, karate etc. Me, as a teen, was no exception. We played these games originally with Amiga's 500 etc. and arcade cabinet. PC version is more closer to the arcade version, but gotta admit that I love the PC and Amiga versions equally. The playability has not changed a bit nor the athmosphere of the original conflict feel. It is still dirty, mean and fast tournament play which we used to play for days trying to learn the moves and fatalities since there were not that much manuals present and people merely copied the floppies etc. For people: F10 brings up the games configuration menu amongst with choises for controllers and if these would not cut it, which only tells that the DOSBox configuration should be consulted, then Ctr+F1 opens the DosBox own configuration even for the screenshots. Not going to spoil others playing experiences by telling more, all I am going to say: JUST GET IT!
the game works perfectly fine on my pc, only problem i have is in mortal kombat 3 when i want to sellect character it skips to the game too quick. Also the controllers wont work so i will give 4 stars for now.
Timeless, photo-realistic graphics. The best gameplay. The original goriest game that is the reason the ESRB exists. But the Fatalities (and other finishers) are extremely creative too, not just gory for gory's sake.
The ai difficulty is tough, but very predictable. The games may be deceptively simple, but learning the moves is only the beginning. The real game is learning the dance of combat, how the a.i. reacts, and how to leverage that behavior to land your attacks successfully while moving at fast speeds. It's a genuine challenge to successfully complete the ladder in just 5 tries. You will not win every time you play, something modern games don't do anymore. This just makes victory, when you achieve it, all the sweeter. (Note: you can activate cheat code for freeplay/unlimited continues).
There's secret characters and fights, all sorts of finishers; it's MK at its finest.
Only downside is this is original MK3, not Ultimate MK 3. So it is missing a few characters and stages.
I am flabbergasted by all the negative reviews complaining about DOS or keyboard controls.
Frankly, keyboard controls are the best way to play fighting games. I never liked playing fighting games on controller. The joystick leads to imprecise inputs that make combos needlessly challenging. It's easier to do on keyboard, which you can re-map so that the controls are like their setup in the arcades.
For. e.g. I use 'O' for High punch, 'L' for low punch, ' [ ' (bracket) for high kick, ' " ' (quotation mark/apostrophe) for low kick, 'P' for dash/sprint (MK3 only) , and ' ; ' (semi-colon) for block. WASD for movement.
This layout is comfortable to use and quite logical. Punch on left, Kick on right, high one row above low, and block/sprint in middle.
DOSBox setup: In config, change scaler = "2xsai" works best for MK 1 & 2; set to "none" for 3.
MK 1 and 3 use CD quality music, while MK 2 has midi. Use GUS (Gravis Ultrasound) soundcard. Sounds much better than default OPL emulation.
I love this game and I love to see it still alive thanks to GoG. It's not visually upgraded as MK Kollection is, but great old game nevertheless. Hoping to see MK 4 next, GoG!
