I'll buy it if you do!

Rating this game is rather tricky, as its success depends on you. Yes you, soldier! Because it’s multiplayer to its very core. And multiplayer needs, you know, multiple players. And that’s where you come in. But why should you? Let’s start with the basics. The game’s built round a highly modded UT99 engine so, while the textures and geometry are distinctly last-decade, the physics and gunplay are sound enough. The levels are a tad basic by today’s standards, but they get the job done. The four different vehicles work well, too. They’re not overpowered, and they bounce around in an vaguely arcadey sort of way – if you’ve ever handled a Warthog, you’ll be right at home here – but they change the pace of the gameplay and encourage teamwork. And there are eight different game modes to keep you busy. I have to admit that I sank dozens of hours into this game back in the day. But after the demise of the master server, I moved on to bigger and better things. And the simple fact is that there are bigger, better and free-er things out there. Firing it up again this evening it reminded me of a lo-tech TF2 with a nod to Counter-Strike and DIPRIP Warm-Up. That’s not a bad thing; all of those games are fun, and so is Mobile Forces. But at one time, this was special; now it’s just OK. Which is where you come in. The single player mode is fine, if a little sterile. To make it really fun, we need a full server. I haven’t bought the GOG version yet, but it’d be worth an extra star-and-a-half if the community gets behind it. So, what do you say? I’ll buy it if you do.

Meh.

The problem seems to be with the phrase "if you like online shooters, you might like Mobile Forces," which could be compared to the phrase "if you like dairy food, here is a brick of cheese." You MIGHT enjoy it, but with hundreds and hundreds of options for other, better, often cheaper online shooters, the question is why you'd want to. As a free downloadable mod; a compliment to another, better game, Mobile Forces would be welcome. It's an online shooter where you shoot things with guns what shoot stuff, and will give you a couple of hours of fun. But it's not worth paying money for, especially when you consider how many other, better games $6 can buy here.

Worth it!

I hadn't played this game before I bought it from GoG. It seemed to have what I was looking for - after I installed it I realised it did and had a few other pleasant surprises on top. The key features that can make you purchase Mobile Forces and, to my mind, justify its presence here as a good old game are the following: * An arcade feel under the modern wrap. It's fast-paced, straightforward. The map and weapon designs make it less cheesy than a UT/Quake fragfest, but the basics are the same. * Simple yet effective gameplay. You don't have a huge variety of weapons (and assorted ammo) to choose from; you just have the usual types (assault rifle, shotgun, RPG etc). The equipment combinations you pick determine quite cleverly the kind of role you can play in your team.The maps are very well done, and play quite differently depending on the game mode chosen. They, as well as the vehicles, encourage teamplay - again in a simple yet effective manner. * LAN and bot support. That was the key feature for me. Setting up a LAN server couldn't be easier, and as the game requires a very low configuration, most laptops as well as the old PC you gave your little nephew will be able to run it smoothly. Then you can stay comfy offline at home with your buddies (multiplayer fun starts with one mate and increases exponentially), fill the remaining player slots with bots and have fun. As the game isn't too complex and isn't massively multiplayer (maps are generally designed for 8-16 players), the bots do a decent job. They're not too clever, but they go the right direction, and put up a fight. I found Humans Vs AI games more fun than usual because, again, of the simple teamplay that owes a lot to the vehicles. Said vehicles are the bonus I didn't expect - they do add something cool to the game. You'll find yourself dropping snipers along the road, patrolling the street in a humvee, chasing the flag carrier in a buggy, racing to rescue an endangered team mate, or launching an all-out assault with plenty of buddies at the back of your truck... So although the game does have some flaws and can look unfinished in some respects, I think they are details quickly forgotten, and if what you read above caught your interest, you'll have a lot of fun with the game and find that the $6 would be well spent for a single LAN gaming night already.

A simple and potentially addictive shooter

Mobile Forces is a simple, well put together military-style shooter that does the basics well. I've read many negative comments about MF. Mostly they were from users who found the experience shallow and unengaging and they have a point, but the game seems to be greater than the sum of its parts. There are some users who have even said this game doesnt even belong on GOG but on the other hand, with the right people and the right setting this game can be a fantastic and addictive experience. For starters this game is graphically basic but polished at the same time (if you get my meaning). It never looks bad just basic. Vehicle and people models look good and when you consider they used the old UT99 engine, you realise that the developers did a pretty good job. Ahh yes, the UT99 engine. One of the most solid and dependable FPS engines ever. I love games with this engine. The mouse tracks where you want, the movement is smooth and the game is now all about you and your skill instead of trying to wrestle with twitchy controls like other engines. It's all there. Right click zoom in and simple vehicle controls. Think of MF the same way you think of UT or Quake Arena. I mean that it is an arena FPS with vehicles you can drive like Battlefield 2. This means you have several maps and stages with various game modes like capture the flag, (or a bomb on a trailer for that matter) and team deathmatch. You unlock the maps as you go and the games consist of bot matches with vehicles thrown in. Playing through the maps in single player mode is alot of fun but i agree with the negative reviews in that the experience can get shallow. The bot A.I. is ok but not hugely challenging. The weapons are basic and few, but handle well and sound reasonable. You have a choice of one assault rifle, one shotgun, one sniper rifle etc, but that isnt really an issue as the game is more down to your skill in the end. The weapon loadout system at re-spawn in simple but actually very good. You can carry only two or threee weapons depending on their size (eg a rifle, shotgun and grenades vs a rocket launcher and a pistol). This system works well and keeps things balanced. Good luck in finding an online game but.... heres where i think this game will shine. Firstly they have crammed all this gameplay into a download less than 300 megs, and with all GOG games you can install as many times as you like. Load this game on a memory stick and you have an instant LAN tournament. The game is simple, dependable and fun..There is no learning curve, just install and go. No CD keys, no registration just hook up some PCs and this game will shine. In that sense it's simplicity is its advantage not its downfall. Have fun with this title..it's not perfect by any means but it is a whole lot of fun. I've given it 3 stars as although the single player experience can get shallow, I think that with the right LAN set-up and people, this would be a perfect choice.

Vroooom

Was one of the first shooter to have vehicles...and pretty damn fun ones too. The single player game is rough I'll agree..but get a couple of people playing and it's great fun.
