Is prepacked with DOSbox, but runs fine on Slackware-current. having 15'' Full-HD screen is a bit of an overkill since havent found a way to adjust resolution. Purely technical review. Might readjust it based on gameplay experience.
This is one of the few games that I never played in my early PC days. Reading all of the reviews, it seemed pretty unanimous that they're great and I've heard good thing from friends that played them.
That said, it sort of just plops you in front of a space map with some buttons and expects you to know what to do with it all.
MOO 1 - I figured out how to move ships to a planet, but they got shot down. Tried another planet and colonized it. I think.
MOO2 - I set it to "tutor" difficulty, but there were no "tutor" tips to be found. After aimlessly clicking things in the UI, I went and downloaded the manuals. Seeing the MOO2 manual completely overwhelmed me with how complex this game is. I'm out.
People complain about MOO3 being dumbed down, but I'm really starting to think that for the average person, it was a necessary change.
Gameplay-wise, this game just doesn't hold up to scrutiny like a Wolfenstein 3D, a SMB or a Colonization does. The greater part of the early game consists of the manipulation of a handful of sliders. FUN!
It's old. It WAS groundbreaking, I acknowledge these facts. But for everyone claiming this is a MUST DOWNLOAD IMMEDIATELY TO ENLIGHTEN YOUR PRIMITIVE MONKEY BRAIN TO THE GREATNESS... I think you need to chill out a bit. If you are a strategy game historian, this game may hold some value to you. If you grew up in the age of text based games and 2kb of memory, this piece of software will certainly retain some of it's charm. No complaints whatsoever about the conversion by the way, GOG has once again done a solid job and I have no technical complaints whatsoever.
As a 28 year old with a limited attention span, budget and time available to play video games, this didn't reach the heights of "MUST PLAY CLASSIC" that the GOG faithful have billed it as.
One man's opinion.
