Still Fun After All These Years
Masters of Magic is still a great game. I first bought it when it came out and was delighted to find it on GOG.com so I can share the fun with my kids. Even with more sophisticated games available; they still enjoy old school.

this game is one of the most fun games ever. the spells, the city building, the action, is as much fun to play now as it was when it came out.

Crack
This game is addictive. I have other games that I'm wanting to play but I keep firing this thing up. There is somewhat of a learning curve. It helps to periodically consult the manual and spellbook. Once you get your bearings in it though it's really fun!

Long since surpassed
It's funny how the top reviews, which all call the game a classic, are themselves 15 years old now. A lot has happened in that time, and many fantastic games have come out which were inspired by this game or at least inspired by its legacy, and many have managed to do everything this game does but simply much better. Including the 2022 remake of this game. So I think it's necessary to say, especially among all the reviews still praising this game to high heaven, that there is truly no reason to play this one today, and that it has aged quite poorly. The game takes like 30 turns before you can even get a large enough army to fight your first battle, the sound effects feel like they'll break your speakers, and the graphics are... interpretive. Back in its day it was a good game, and very impactful, but unlike games like Age of Wonders 1, or the early Civilization or RTS games, there is genuinely nothing you're gonna get out of playing this one today, other than some hearing damage.

MOM: caster of magic
After playing the original Master of Magic for many years during my childhood I found the experience in ‘caster of magic’ very lacking. Play balance is very bad. On harder difficulties the AI always attacks your weakest cities relentlessly. Automatically knowing which one is least defended. Enemy units spawned from nowhere with no time for the player to do anything about it, whether it be enemy wizard units or rampaging monsters. The AI in this mod and maybe from the base game basically cheats non-stop.
