Shows great promise but frustrating!

I was excited to see this game after having played Uplink and Hacknet and needing a new game to get my hacking fix. Two missions into this and I knew this was far from the game to do it. I rarely post reviews, but my experience was so bad I feel it's my duty to share. Here's what made my experience so terrible: 1) The "hacking" experience is overly simple. Find ip address using a ping and iphack the ip address. That's it. 2) Buggy. Minor bugs and major bugs were all over the place. I CTD'd more than once. One lead that I thought I had into a case was either not even programmed into the game or bugged out and was inaccessible (very frustrating!) Also, basic typing (home/end keys) and cutting/pasting is non-existent. Don't close the notes window or have your notes erased forever. Various other bugs also present. 3) Perhaps the worst is that you can only use one clue as evidence. In this game you're basically a hacker working for the government to apprehend criminals. Each case you need a suspect's present location (to arrest) and evidence of a crime being committed. You can only submit one piece of evidence. If you get this evidence wrong or if you get the immediate location wrong the arrest will usually go through, but you'll get a message saying that they had to be released. Trust me, this is beyond infuriating when you're sitting on a whole pile of evidence in your folder and you just can't figure the right combination out that will let you advance. Furthermore, if you get the location wrong but the evidence right it will still arrest the guy and you'll get a message saying the guy had to be released. I couldn't stand doing missions and rage-quitted after the fourth mission. This game shows tremendous potential but it plays like an alpha build. Major issues in the framework need to be fixed before it's playable. Hopefully the dev makes some much needed corrections in the future. The game itself and storyline have a lot of promise.

Event Driven Story (Not A Hacking Sim)

You are an MI7 agent who investigates crimes via your computer desktop, finds evidence, and requests arrests. Throughout the game you will uncover and attempt to foil a plot to overthrow MI7. Pros: + Music + Charming parodies Cons: - Bugs - Limited functionality - Bad/Confusing design - Poor and confusing English at times This game is a story that only progresses when you perform certain actions. Also, this game IS NOT a hacking simulator. The most "hacking" that you'll do in the game is guessing passwords based on their hints. The name of the "iphack" command is misleading. The parodies, such as the Windows XP blue screen of death, XP account icons, and the Ubuntu start up music, are fairly amusing. There are many bugs, but none of the bugs that I encountered were game breaking. However, I needed to restart a mission so I could complete it due to the console erasing the current line every time "u" was pressed. You are very limited in what you can do. For example, you can't save your notes or move the cursor away from the end of the line. This becomes annoying because the game attempts to simulate real world machines, but it does it in a very limited and often incorrect way. This leads to time being wasted on experimentation. The interface has many problems, such as your notes being deleted if you close the window and words overlapping at times. Also, some elements of the game are really confusing. For example, some files that you need to upload in order to make an arrest don't make sense, such as the code file with the single line "run_game()". Usually the dialog is fine, but at times characters suddenly become difficult to understand.

Buggy

Game itself isn't bad, but there are many bugs. And now (2017-02-03) at case 9 game is always crashing. Better wait a month or more for patches and for good discount. In my opinion game is worth about 5$. It is pretty short, gameplay is just iphack/list and guessing with evidence is correct to arrest suspect...

Arrest system too finicky

"We need to arrest John Smith. Here's a photo of him murdering a dog and him on tape confessing to wanting to shoot a politician. Now, if only there was some evidence we could find to link him to an unrelated crime." Most of the game is spent resubmitting an arrest warrant with no consequences whatsoever. In one case, I arrested "the wrong person" like 25 times before choosing a different city and getting a 25 year sentence.

What could've been but is not..

The thing with this game is, for a moment it shows potential.. Then there's a few small letdowns, and subsequently it drops off more and more.. If you want a nice hacking game try Uplink instead. For thsoe interested: 1) The cases built is kinda floppy.. There should be like a progress inicoator or something with a 100% when all the parts needed to get it done, being needed to add. Instead you get a pick and choose from the parts (but never the whole) of the case. Most annoying. 2) The 'search' for clues is kinda lame. There's no diversion, no misleads and certainly not a multitude.. You end up simply reading and typing the one lead you have.. pring fro Ip adress and iphack fro the actual 'hack'..not much at all.. 3) Lacks tutorial, but it was pick-up able..(thanx to other games I played that were a bit similar) In any case, I only played the demo, but it kinda was enough.. Graphics aren't that great, but a good game doesn't need that much anyway..too bad this isn't one.. Compared to Uplink, this game has a little better graphics, but way less game.. Uplink was great, (I still play it sometimes, just to try the bank hack with an unupgraded Gateway :D ) Nah..this game needs a kick upstairs..it could have been much much much better.. (kinda was hoping it was..building a case a lil more CSI style would work..) (Better hacking mechanism, like point on IP and click to connect, leaving the 'ping' out..) Anyway..maybe it'll be better some day, but right now..30 mins in..I'm "Nah..got better things to do.." In the case it does change into something better, change into "Mainling 2.0" so people can see it. Laterz, ZMacZ
