Repetitive but Enthralling

I'll preface this short review by saying I'm a fan of both Mafia and Mafia 2, and have completed Mafia 2 a numerous amount of times. Mafia 3 is not a typical Mafia game by any means. It has very little to do with the Italian mob, it's much more focused on how an outsider gets his entire world shattered by them, and seeks revenge. The story, atmosphere, music and main cast in this game is all wonderful. It's a very gripping and intense plot that makes you want to keep on playing - but the core loop is really where you start to see some issues. Now, Mafia 2 received a lot of backlash for the fact that it's open world wasn't really "open", and Mafia 3 tries to fix that issue. In doing so, many, and I mean MANY of the missions are rinse-repeat. The 3 things you'll be doing between main story segments is either destroying some sort of target, killing targets, or interrogating targets (that will give you more information to kill or destroy more targets). This can get really tiring, and you have to do it from region to region in order to progress to the main story bits. That being said, the REAL more Mafia 2-esque missions are superb, and very fun to play. These missions are few and far between however, and mainly take place at the end of liberating a region. Now, just because this busy-work is plentiful, doesn't mean it's not fun. I personally find it enjoyable, but only in short bursts, and I really do find it gets in the way of simply playing for the story. I almost wish they would have added a "Mafia 2 Story Mode" where you just went from story missions to story missions, if you really didn't feel like doing all the odd jobs it took to get there. All in all the gameplay is really subjective, but the story (while not inherently mob-based) is very well done. Go into not expecting to play as another Vito Scaletta, but expecting to take the helm of a man who's had his entire life torn apart by the Italian mob, in an era with plenty of politcal and racial strife.

This game was released to plenty of negative reviews, mostly regarding playability, now that most of that's sorted out by way of updates we're free to judge the gameplay without these annoyances. There's a LOT of driving to be done, and it does get monotonous after awhile. They do spice it up with some shooting and racing in between, but I feel that the best way to make the time go is with either a huge and diverse radio selection(I especially enjoy talk radio, absent here), or have a lot of character dialogue, neither of which this game has. In fact the dialogue vs pacing could've been done better, since on almost all my missions I finished the driving part before the talking ended. That said, the driving mechanics are stellar and even with my streaming setup having a very slight lag I was able to accurately navigate between cars and posts with high speed, having a sense of accomplishment there. The cover and shooting work great, if you're playing with a gamepad the aim assist takes a lot of the burden off fiddly stick aiming(you can tone this down or turn it off completely). Stealth mechanics are also good, forcing you to think your way around the map, and you're rewarded well for picking off only the enemies that matter. For example in truck stealing missions you can pretty much get away with minimal kills if you can make your way to the truck undetected, it's even faster this way. Lastly I love the stealth kill animations - the stabbing and slitting is brutally satisfying. As for the characters, they're very well told through the cutscenes, and you do get 'into the story' as you progress. If you play Vito's missions you'll also uncover some interesting backstory. Yes, it is the same thing repeated many times. People are quick to complain. Isn't FPS and MMO and racing the same though? The big question is have they made it fun to play, and to that I say, they've done a decent job.

Not worth the money.

Sluggish and not interesting. Mafia II was way better. Driving is stupid. 3rd person view is stupid. Lost 70 złotys. :(
