GTA for busy people
I've never played the original, so this is my first time experiencing The Mafia. It’s a streamlined, linear GTA. It has excellent voice acting, easy missions, and intense, tense shooting sequences. I loved it and will soon move on to the second one.

Superb period piece
This game tells a linear, work your way up from the bottom, mafia story. The story is the star of the experience, because the game play can feel a bit dated. It is worth the time to play through the campaign even if you put it on the lowest difficulty, just for the quality story they've creafted.

It's an imrovement, in some ways
The story has been elevated far beyond what it was in the original, every character is now much more fleshed out and interesting. Some events have been changed slightly but it almosy always makes it better. The gunplay is improved, as to be expected of it coming two decades after the original. it's servicable. Doesn't elvate the game but doesn't hinder it either. BUT, the game has lost a lot of its charm from the original. A lot of flavour has been shifted, not erased, to make a more compact package. It does make it, however, a fundamentally different experience from the original. I always considered the original be somewhat of an immersive sim with some of its aspects, but this definitive edition seems to be a more consice tool to retell the story of the game in a much more interesting way,
