A hail of bullets from a tommy gun or a shotgun in the face over linguine at lunch. You choose a life with the Salieri family, the cops and feds will be the least of your problems. The city of Lost Heaven has been torn in two by a turf war, with rival families, the Salieris and the Morellos, battling for supremacy and control. Join the Mob - you've got no choice.
Mafia combines amazing graphics and engrossing cinematics with a compelling storyline, bringing the 1930's underworld to life. The game allows you to follow the rise and fall of competing crime families, complete with action packed missions, a vast living city, and vehicles and weapons that capture the essence of the 1930's Mafioso world.

I remember playing this game more then 15 years ago. I was enchanted by the story, interesting characters, city exploration, style of that period and more. After coming back this year I must say - all imporant things have survived the test of time. I enjoyed every minute of it and highly recommend playing this timeless classic.
Mafia I is one of my favourite games. Too bad this release is bringing the experience down. Frequent segfaults (mainly during quitting, but some in-game too) and absence of car radio music (I'm not complaining the original is gone, I'm complaining there is NONE) - as the game is 1/2 shooting and 1/2 driving, I've to substract 2*. The intelligence of NPCs is fairly good at release-time-measurements, today it seems weird.
Police will sometime fine you for going 2kph over the speed limit, sometime they won't see 20kph over. They mind driving through red light, but they don't mind driving through people. Your mates will often go through your firing zone.
But when you get your Random Number God pleased, enjoy this linear story game - as you would a movie. And prepare for some tears...
After so many years of people requesting 2K to sell this game digitally we finally have it on GOG! I bought this game on the XBOX, and it was one of my favorite ones. The graphics were very impressive at the time, and they managed to create a city that feels very alive through small details like being able to take the train, having to respect transit rules while driving, going to a gas station to refuel the car, etc. The open world feels great, full of small details that make you see how much efforts the developers place into this game. Then we have the story. There is a reason why this is still consider the best Mafia game to date. It is engaging from beginning to end, and that with interesting shooting mechanics made it a master piece of its time. I completely recommend anyone interested in classics to get this game.
As a side note, since the song licenses already expired GOG had to remove them from them from the game for being able to sell it digitally. This is a shame, but it was that or just not getting the game at all. There are still some online tutorials, though, for adding the songs back into the game.
Game is very old, but it isn't to outdated to enjoy these days. You might have to do a little bit of .ini file messing around to get it to look a bit better and there are some patches out there to help get the radio back and make things run a bit smoother. I highly recommend this game.
This game has lots of great dialog. You become attached to Tommy and how he gets involved with the Mafia; he wants out, but is stuck in it and it just gets worse and worse. There is some bad language, but it isn't too bad like Mafia 2 which has horrific language. I especially like the ending and how it plays into Mafia 2.
The actions and keys in this game are very good. I like how cars move and I really like how the cops react to you speeding or running red lights, unlike Mafia 2 which (Mafia 2 you almost always just outrun the cops and never stop for them regardless of where you are at in the game). They have a good balance of "should I run for it, or should I just take the ticket" feelings.
