A hail of bullets from a tommy gun or a shotgun in the face over linguine at lunch. You choose a life with the Salieri family, the cops and feds will be the least of your problems. The city of Lost Heaven has been torn in two by a turf war, with rival families, the Salieris and the Morellos, battling for supremacy and control. Join the Mob - you've got no choice.
Mafia combines amazing graphics and engrossing cinematics with a compelling storyline, bringing the 1930's underworld to life. The game allows you to follow the rise and fall of competing crime families, complete with action packed missions, a vast living city, and vehicles and weapons that capture the essence of the 1930's Mafioso world.

I had played the second game alot times on the ps3. When this was released on GOG, I went a head and try it. When I played it, it was not half bad after all. The graphics looked good for early 2000s game, Gameplay runs played like the Hitman series, the sound is actually really great, and story feels like your in a Godfather movie. I would give a 5 but for me, I gave it a 4 because the controls was little confusing for me but will get us to it. I recommend try this game out.
You need to enable Legacy Components - Directplay for this to work, but in my case when I try that all I get is error code 0x80070057 despite deactivating all antivirus software. I see some Windows 10 users say they get this to work, but the Steam page for this game says it's not compatible for Win10 x64 users.
I'd love to try the game but it's not going to work with my system and GoG does not state that. If I'm just being a dumbass incapable of troubleshooting effectively let me know, but I shouldn't need to make a new partition running an older version of Windows just to play the game. That's kinda the point of GoG.
Mafia is broken. In many ways.
The game itself, awesome. Great story, weird voice acting but a nice cinematic feel. Gameplay feels good, the city has a great atmosphere. But the game is, unfortunately, an utterly gruesome mess to play.
First, bugs.
I've played the game back then and I can't recall this happening, but I had to rely on dowloaded savegames four times already because four times the missions were broklen. Steal a car, it doesn't spawn. Talk to a NPC, he is stuck in an animation and cannot be talked to. Stuff like this.
Then, difficulty.
There are games that should be punishing, because some players like a challenge.
Then there are games that should not be, because the main theme is not the challenge but the cinematic gameplay.
Mafia is a game that should be fair and fun to play. It is not.
Play the first mission. Run away. Behind you, shots. The shots are kind of random because of the massive recoil - so, sometimes you die. In this kind of tutorial. Not by your fault, but by chance.
Play any mission: Get shot two or three times, die. Repeat the last few minutes for you cannot save.
Play any mission with other characters: They are not helping, they are trying to fail you. Your friends run blindly into fire and draw attention of several enemies at once, so that you can be sure to fail the mission a few times because your friends died.
In short: Every time you have fun, you have to pay for it with frustration. Every memory of a good time gets overshadowed with a memory of rage.
I love this game. I really do.
But I hate to play it. It feels like it is made to punish you. To make you fail. Way more than to be fun.
Watch reviews and playthroughts. Enjoy the atmosphere. But don't try to play it.
Mafia is the little GTA clone that couldn’t. I respect the ambition in trying to make an open world game with a setting that’s not typically used in games, but the execution failed to deliver. In a sense, it was ahead of its time; trying to capture the feeling of a relatively unexplored era in video games in a genre that was just finding its footing. But the only problems I can attribute to being of its time are the clunky shooting and general atmosphere of the world. The poor mission and level design, the overreliance on driving as a gameplay loop, and the high-school tier storytelling are all genuine problems that I can’t believe were not criticized more at the time of release.
