Positive sign
1. Lack of gigantomania inherent in Dark Souls in the design of opponents.
2. Moderate system requirements with very decent graphics.
3. Adequate pumping system. Possibility of normal pumping stamina for playing with light weapons and armor.
4. Detailed study of the game world and scenery.
Negative sign
1. Small enough game world.
2. Primitive scripts of behavior for bosses.
3. A rather weak ending.
4. The game crashes periodically.
The game isn’t easy. It’s easier than the game it was inspired from (which I don’t even want to mention), but it isn’t “easy”. It’s much harder than your average action-RPG. I will write just the differences from “that” game:
FAIRER. The enemies don’t cheat you, in a sickening way to force you to “git gut”.
FORGIVING. If you couldn’t block or roll and eventually get hit, you don’t lose half your health from the lowest of enemies with a single hit.
RESPECTS YOUR TIME. Save points are close to each other and, if you’re careful, you don’t need to replay large chunks of the game over and over. Unless you want to go farming. Also, there are always save points right before bosses, so you don’t have to fight 50 enemies just to get there.
ENEMIES DON’T REAPPEAR WHEN YOU DO THE MISTAKE (!) OF SAVING THE GAME AND CONTINUE PLAYING. Enemies reappear if you die, or change area, or quit the game and reenter.
KEEPS YOUR NERVES AND, EVENTUALLY, YOUR HEALTH IN GOOD CONDITION. Because if you’re careful, you’ll go far.
YOU SAVE MONEY. You don’t feel the urge to throw your keyboard, mouse, or monitor out of the window and buy a new one.
I was going to write that the only thing I’d ask from the 2nd game it’s if it is made to be more open world, i.e. cities to visit, sub-quests from citizens etc., but no, I LIKED IT as it is!
It’s… BETTER.
BUT... I couldn't finish it! When I defeated the Annihilator, a portal appears. But when I try to enter, the game crashes to desktop. I've read that it also happened to others, but not everyone. It happened to me too, though. And I haven't found a solution. I'll just consider the game as "finished".
YES, I rated the game with 5 stars even if I had a game-breaking bug and I couldn't finish it! That's how tremendously good time I had playing it! I also finished the DLC (didn't mention it earlier).
I just hope for Lords of the Fallen 2, the developers to be more careful for bugs like that.
Contrary to what some people might think when they read other reviews: Your grandmother probably won't be able to master this game! - It is not too hard though and you'll probably finnish it within a dozen hours (more if your grandma is watching you playing and constantly tells you how shockingly violent it is).
The only thing causing frustration for me: Way too much respawning of enemies.
Just completed this game with 55% achievements and not likely I’ll go back for more.
It has all the markings of a great game with tough combat and cool weapons, but something never quite grabbed me with this one.
It felt sort of aimless as you wander around gaining experience and finding cool stuff but all for what? Amongst all the cool lore and settings, I kept finding myself just progressing to get to the end, not because I was invested in the game.
Still, if you like the Souls-like style or whatever they call it, it’s definitely worth picking up!
This was my actual first Soulslike game and I loved it. It's amazing in everything.
I've played a bit of DS1 in an old laptop a long time ago and, as far as I remember, the game doesn't have a big emphasis on the plot and storytelling.
This one, however, takes another road. You're dragged to Harkyn's story of redemption as he comes back to his kingdom in an attempt to stop the Rhogars invasion, a race of demons that are infesting the land with their forces and corruption.
There's plenty of scrolls you collect along your way and each one is a completly voice acted record of something that happened in the kingdom. Therefore, you have a lot of lore to explore alongside the main plot.
It's simple, but not bad at all. Indeed, I enjoyed it a lot, it feels like a great story. It's nice to see that some interactions with NPCs feels a lot like when you're playing God Of War 1 and the first NPCs see Kratos. They fear him and are disgusted. The same happens with Harkyn, however, they often accept your help here.
Overrall, I felt the plot and story was a lot more present here than in Dark Souls.
Moving to design choices, my favorite part, I can't say more than that I loved all of it. All armors and weapons are simply excellent, some are astonishing, for all the classes. They really make you feel confident and strong to face the foes ahead.
As for the gameplay, you know the rules. Observe, dodge, attack, defend, potion, dodge, strong attack... the pattern that makes the name "Souslike". One cool thing about this game, and one of the points that make things easier, is a hand cannon you get along your way. This mega buster turns mana into ammo and helps a lot against all types of enemies.
To finish, you have a nice replayability factor, which is common in the gametype, but I think that's a valid point. You can chose the basic warrior, magic focused priest or backstab focused thief.
Definetly worth buying. Nice story, cool designs, good OST. I liked it a lot!
