Great Game, Great Concept,

Foremost, this is a good, fun game that has already taken up hours of my life as I go from run to run. It's also got got a couple issues too. Conceptually, it's one of those games where you don't control your character exactly, but control the circumstances around them and watch them go - a la Gratuitous Space Battles, something I've always enjoyed. In this game, what the player does is use cards to create the hero's environment, which changes what lies in their way as they go around a loop, getting persistent buffs from buildings. This hits two poles: roguelike/rpg, and god/builder, and is tightly made at its core. Each card you can add to the world ups challenge, adding perks but also making things harder - some even combining into new ideas. As a fan of both, it works well. There is a downside, though, as after a couple hours and one or two camp upgrades in, the player may notice that the ability to alter the world in a progressive way abruptly slows to a crawl. The game very quickly stoppers progress and gets grind: few of the new buildings for a while (or the cards that come with them) significantly affect the game world. Card combinations dry up quickly. Base resources trickle in, and some require the player to keep cards that don't mesh with newer ones to get. Enemies don't typically drop resources (upping other problems), and - most problematic of all - making stronger enemies tends to just give you more rolls on the RNG rather than affecting what you get, so there often isn't a reward for making things more challenging. Thus, you can make the game harder, but can't much affect how you progress or positively affect future runs. There are other classes, but after putting hours in each they feel more like hardmode trials than different ways to play. All in all it's still great, don't get me wrong, but it'll be a while before it builds on what it promises - in a game where building new things is the point - and this makes it less great than it could be.

Could have been good if...

... If it had more content. The whole game is a proof of concept, and an awesome one ! It's very good artistic sense and design hide a lack of depth and abysmal content. The game is so slow that we want to speed up after 1 hour. Once we do that with Cheat engine at a 10 times multiplier, we understand why the whole game is so slow by default: it us believe that there is something meaningful after all this grind. There is nothing. At an enjoyable speed (10 times multiplier), the game is finished in 10 hours but it's a chore, without diversity, variety or new strategies to try. So in definitive, Loop hero is a great game for the first hour only, when we discover the mechanics and when we still have expectations. And then there is nothing new after the first hour and the game betrays ours expectations continuously.

Can't recommend

I bough the game on steam, clocked in about 15 hours and I don't think I will play it any more. The game is fun for the first 10 hours, after that you see pretty much everything there is to see in the game and it will just repeat ad nauseum. You as a player also have very little agency in the game, besides placing new tiles (you also get equipment for your character, but it's jsut numbers and replcing one piece of equipment with anothet that has higher numbers). Also, the game loves to skip out on certain key information in the tooltips. For example, it doesn't mention that if you build a mountain, you will start getting attacked by harpies. Or that wheat fields, which are beneficial and supposed to heal you, will also spawn monsters. This is just two examples off the top of my head, but there are many more like this in the game. Overall I can't recommend this game, definitely not for it's full price.

So good, but potential poorly executed.

+Great design. +Great music. +Great characters. - I need more content. Seriously. I expected much more. -Small card pool. Not enough combinations, enemies, challenges. -Not feeling progression realy well after 5-6 hours. You almost got everything and no more content, except bosses and some more expensive buildings. Great game, not enough content.MB good as timekiller.

Loop Hero... A Game that Achieves!!

I have to say... this game is what I have been looking for a long time, it is simple, music gives me a call back to a memory I can't even remember (sense of nostalgia), and make me want to march forward to defeat evil!! The way this game is designed gives you the sense of "building" but with a purpose, to be able to choose whether or not to continue to the next chapter is up to you on how you prepare your brave warrior. The deck building concept is really fun, I can either set the board to be more resource heavy or focus on expanding the creature spawn, love to fight the baddies. However, my most favorite card is "Blood Groves", love watching the creatures you meet be devoured by vines... Spooky :). The developers did an amazing job, and yes, some people may not enjoy the atari like graphics of the board but honestly, I like to induldge my imagination. To me a game is suppose to make you imagine and make you feel you are the hero. I felt that with this game, I hope to see more games like this and I want to say... Excellent Job Four Quarters and Devolver Digital!!! NOTE: I know some people do not enjoy there is no save when "running" the loop. I like this concept, it puts you in a decision... should I retreat or take the fight to the boss? It helps you understand that you can fight another day. and of course #BetterThanStarWarsBattlefrontEA
