It's... Just okay.
I never played this series growing up. My adventure game memories all come from Kings Quest. So there's no nostalgia to bias my review. The artwork and music are superb. The music especially sounds incredible if you have a Roland MT-32 (or compatible sound generators). Interface is smooth and I didn't run into any game-breaking bugs. This package comes with ScummVM and it runs fantastic. I actually prefer ScummVM's MIDI implementation - bravo team! It handles the MT-32 patch bank loading just fine and unlike DOSBox, I don't have to slow down the CPU to prevent the unit from being overwhelmed. The game itself is your typical adventure game fanfare. I think my biggest complaint is the puzzles. They're even more nonsensical than some of the stuff I'm used to in King's Quest (if you can believe it). Quite a few times I had to consult a walkthrough and then was left frustrated as all hell. The phrase "oh that's ridiculous - how was I to ever think of THAT" was a common utterance of mine as I soldiered on through the game. For the sale price of $1.49, I cannot complain. Beware that most glowing reviews are probably from people who grew up with the game and are happy to replay it. If you've never played it as a youth, then you'll probably be wondering what all the fuss is about. TLDR - superb presentation (sans voice acting) that's marred by its badly-aged gameplay.
