Legacy of Kain™ Soul Reaver 1&2 Remastered is now available for
pre-order! Grab it now and experience the epic conflict of Kain and Raziel in original form or with remastered graphics.
Soul Reaver 2 picks up where Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver left off, with Raziel having just plunged through the Chronoplast time portal in his relentless pursuit of Kain. Over the course of his quest for revenge, Raziel must unearth the mysteries of Nosgoth’s ancient races, expose the machinations behind the corruption of the Pillars, and the vampire genocide. Throughout the game, Raziel acquires numerous new abilities, weapon enhancements, and spells, all of which are critical to the completion of his epic adventure.
Soul Reaver is a third-person combat adventure filled with devious puzzles and kick-ass combat. Fly, swim, jump, and even travel from the material world to the spectral realm to overcome obstacles and conquer your enemies. With over 40 abilities to choose from, no two fights will ever be the same.
Are you ready to bring an end to the Legacy of Kain?
Acquire new and improved Soul Reaver weapon enhancements, physical abilities, and relics to interact with the environment and unlock the dark secrets of Nosgoth.
Play through a gorgeous gothic realm of highly detailed architecture and environments, with an appropriately baroque plot as well.
Devour the souls of new enemies including vampire hunters, Sarafan warrior-priests, and extra-dimensional demons.
Awful camera, boring combat, horrible lighting design (half of the time areas are so dark you have to crank the gamma to the point of breaking lit areas), constant backtracking (remember backtracking in Soul Reaver 1 being optional for the purposes of powers and stat boosting? No more, now it's built into the main flow of the game but without any of the rewards!), tedium of shifting is magnified to stupid degrees by always needing to gather souls each & every shift due to HP depletion, story is having the same discussion over fate & destiny every conversation 300 times over, no clear goals or ways to navigate, gimmick soul reaver blades that add nothing but a complete misunderstanding of the metroidvania design the first game achieved. All by all one of the worst sequels I've ever played.
The music is not as good as in SR1, but everything else is top notch.
If you have ze spectral realm shif bug and run in one place and the surroundings don't change etc. turn off V sync in game and enable it through Nvidia control panel.
For random crash or freeze, set the affinity to CPU 0. Atleast thats what worked for me (win7), hope it helps.
To be honest three stars may be a bit over zealous, it probably deserves less.
Let me qualify that. I loved the 'Legacy of Kain' games when they came out, and now after all these years, I had a crazy yearning to play them again. 'Blood Omen' is pretty good considering its age, Soul Reaver had some boring lack lustre combat, but was still a really good game, I was surprised that it still stands up, in fact it was probably more difficult than a lot of modern games, because it didn't hold your hand and made you think, and it had a great story. When I finished it I was excited to dive straight into the sequel, and this is where it got disappointing.
The game doesn't work unless you limit the framerate to about 60 fps, enabling v-sync in the set up menu doesn't do this and you'll need a third party tool, Nvidia Profile Inspector works well for this. It took a fair bit of trial and error and internet searches, and trying some weird things before I got it working, and everytime I tried it to see if it had worked, I had to watch the unskippable cut scene at the beginning, which is long... (tip: have fraps or something running when you first boot it up to check the framerate, if it's over 60, shut it down and knock the fps down, don't do what I did, hindsight is great).
Now to the actual gameplay, the combat is just as lacklustre, but there's a lot more of it, and it's really boring, especially when the game throws up barriers to force you to fight a room full of enemies, it's so tedious. The areas are quite spread out, there are a fair few cut scenes, but few save points and no warp gates, running back and forward over the same ground, having to have boring fights all of the way, and not being able to save the game until you've fought your way through a new area, done the big puzzle area, and fought your way all through the same area, back to the save point. This game does not stand up today. Have I already said it's tedious, still if you like LoK, it's a must!
