Lands of Lore: The Throne of Chaos takes you on an adventure: save the dying king and stop the evil sorceress Scotia’s Dark Army. Your band of heroes will travel through a vast fantasy word full of mysterious places, dangerous monsters, and hidden treasures in a quest to find a way to defeat the immortal evil enchantress and save the world.
In Lands of Lore: Guardians of Destiny you enter a world of intense beauty and mortal danger where your slightest move can trigger cataclysmic events, miraculous escapes, or lethal battles. See magical cities rise out of great oceans. Enter the musty caverns of Dracoid ruins. Discover gruesome altars and witness secret ceremonies never before seen by humans.
Lands of Lore 1+2 is a solid piece of cRPG history. It was a time of transition from 2D to 3D, from floppy disks to CDs. New technologies allowed things like live actors in 3D environment, full voice-overs, good sound quality, and CGI sequences. All this was used in Lands of Lore 2 to create vast, rich world that is anything but boring or ordinary.
Not much to add to the praise others have given the game, except that maybe it is one of those rare things made by people that seems to rise above the sum of its parts and achieve some sort of higher synergy. And, like a good wine, it is only getting better with age.
I played this game in the 90s, beat it. This version is unplayable, endless respawns of overpowered enemies in certain levels kill any joy. On any difficulty setting. Maybe my version is bugged.
Loved Lands of Lore when I bought it years ago and never managed to complete it (pre-internet hints and tips). I can now proudly say that I have defeated Scotia and am the Hero of Gladstone! Really good dungeon-crawler with imagination, great music, impression-worthy characters (Hello, I'm Baccata!). Great fun.
LOL2 - hate the movement, hate the graphics, can't get into it at all. Sure I will attempt it at some point but it's a disappointment after the first game. They should have just stuck with the cartoon graphics and same movement system, made the inventory easier to sort, and just left it at that. Sure it could be a good game but I just can't be bothered!
I have played this game many times. I love the LOL series (OK III is a like, not love). Anyway, the port is pretty good, but has some holes. It does not need 3D acceleration anymore, but the game would benefit from features like AA. The controls don't let you use more than two mouse buttons which is very limiting. The keyboard is hard to configure for a standard wasd strafe setup.
The biggest failure is a glitch that many (including me) have had which stops you mid-game at a vital scene - actually, the very animation that is about to occur in the first game preview image. The game crashes to desktop. There are a dozen articles about this online. For an old, lightly selling game, this is suggestive of a wide spread problem.
In all, fantastic game, but GOG needs to work some port kinks out, and some modernizing enhancement options would be nice.
