Looks good but plays basic

The game is gorgeous (though weirdly, the RTS portion of the game looked better in the original) but unfortunately options are quite basic. Though there are many upgrades to buildings, they all feel inconsequential and planning upgrade paths is hampered by poor UI. Diplomacy is extremely limited, and if you don't do the RTS portion, warfare feels similarly limited. There's not even seasons and the courses of entire wars have changed throughout history due to harsh winters. Never had any significant random events either. No plague, no droughts. Also, some games you get steamrolled in after 30 minutes, some games you win after a few hours without really understanding why. Still, fun for a few hours, but don't expect more.

Needs Rebalancing and More Depth

Aesthetically pleasing to the eyes, nice UI, color scheme, and an interesting blend of Crusader Kings and Total War. However, this is where the praise stops. The balancing needs to be reworked including how trading, diplomacy, the royal family, and war function which is basically the whole game. Look at previous reviews regarding these issues, they are on the money. The devs need to go CKIII and TW and learn some things from these games. My verdict: there is a good game here but it will need more work. I cannot recommend the game unless it is on sale.

Brilliant, even better than original

Kept all the brilliance of the original but improved on it. When i saw they were remaking this, i really hoped they'd do a good job but didn't get too much hope up. Well I was extremely surprised when it was actually released, and it'a better than i imagined. One of the things i love is how you can pause it and change game speed - which makes it really strategy not just "who can click the fastest" like most RTS. For a change this really is strategy, you really need to think about what you're doing. And there's so many things to keep you on your toes - building, resources, trading, espionage, relationships, haven't got time to cover all of them. Must've taken tremendous effort to get so many things working so well together. I like the fairly historically accurate elemnt of it too - these are real historical provinces / cities / countries. They shift a bit as the game goes on but it still gives you a rough idea of the historical landscape of Europe. Most of the game is fairly accurate too, really gives you a feel for the complications of all the subtle, and less subtle, elements of competition between the nobility back then.

Shallow and disappointing.

Basically the title says it all. The game has interesting ideas but they don't lead anywhere. You can build up a province to produce a lot of goods but at the end of the day the investment in gold isn't really worth the payoff at the end. Conquest is a much more efficient method - unfortunately a very boring one. Enemy AI is nonexistend and the battle aspect of the game is incredibly shallow. Units react sluggish and it's a very simple exercise of either having superior numbers or exploiting certain mechanics (bring a catapult and win any game). After about 10-15 hours you have seen everything this game has to offer.

Not Bad Not Good

I played maybe 500 hours of the original game without the mod and probably another 300 with the mod, the 2004 game wasn't complex but very deep. This remake or whatever is as wide as the ocean but as shallow as a puddle, we gamers forget when a sequel gets released more than 10 years later the original developers, management team, designers & etc. aren't the same people that make the new game. Hence the inferior product relative to the original.
