As a thug beaten to the brink of death you have started your mission of revenge. You want to bury those bastards six feet under for what they have done to you, but to do so you need to start your own gang and recruit right from the streets. If a new gang member turns out to be a punk, blast him, and make room for new ones. Move up in the world, but watch out for the Kingpin, eventually you're going to have to take him on.
Somewhere in the past that never crossed paths with the future lies the world of the Kingpin. Burned out buildings and urban decay are the landscape. Local gangs roam the streets, protecting their turf and scooping out opportunities.
Recruit a gang of thugs and rule the streets, snuff out rivals with a single head-shot and watch them bleed to death. Or put them on fire and watch them suffer. You will deliver an extremely brutal and violent death to those who messed you up. Kill everyone who stands in your way and become new Kingpin - crime lord of every thief, murderer and dirty thug in the city.
Bloody, brutal, swearing-heavy combat - one of the first truly adult-oriented games

This is one of the best single player FPS I ever played.
The art style is insanely atmospheric, the cut scenes are awesome, it's not too long or too short and it sure has one of the best looking flamethrowers ever made.
And honestly, I don't understand how some people can say it's a hard game, just lover the difficulty level if it's that hard for you - there's nothing saying that you need to complete games on hardest - all the time.
This FPS is much different than Quake 2, where its engine is modded for this game.
You can still go-out-and-blast on Novice or Easy, but at Normal or higher difficulty, you have to think about stealthy approach, talking around, or get your henchmen and gang on enemies.
AI are decent for both your henchmen and enemies.
They try to follow you through vents and ladders(think of the fact that it's released one year after Half-Life), ask you to stop for healing(they regenerate slowly, somehow).
Though you can't bring them between chapters and you can have only two henchmen at once.
If you don't need those henchmen anymore, you can just shoot them in the head and grab their guns dropped.
During combat, some cowards(NPCs) try to run if you have guns better than theirs(like, you point shotgun at a guy with lead pipe) or they're hurt too much(They usually leave blood trails), and not-so-wimpy NPCs will strafe and crouch frequently, making your aim much harder.
The singleplayer is hard, as there's some parts where you can get stuck(like, Chapter 2 have a bad ending scene), or hard to find things and ways out(easier than Xatrix's previous game, Redneck Rampage though).
Overall I liked its difficulty, and its DEMO(contained an Chapter 1, without the scrapyard map and Flamethrower was hidden in the last map) was the FIRST FPS I HAVE EVER PLAYED.
Note : this game contains LOADS OF F-words. I've seen no games with more F-words than Kingpin.
An admittance: I used codes. This game is ungodly hard. They say this is one of the earlier games to have a more complicated damage system, where headshots get you ahead. I had difficulty figuring that out. Aiming can just be a nightmare through much of the gameplay, with enemies strafing back and forth hitting you 100% of the time, and you struggling to just hit their torso once--especially early on, until you work your way up past the shotgun (which is hardly any more useful than the useless pistol until you're 2 feet away and charging) to the assault rifle by working, or just throwing down a 'give all' cheat. And frankly, the guns don't feel so great to handle. Clumsy.
When this game was released, I was 11 or 12, and spent many hours figuring the demo out, but I never got past the demo, despite my nagging my parents. So it's been a dream of mine to play Kingpin for years and years, and now I've finally accomplished my early video game dream. It feels good, but I can't help but be disappointed. The game feels incomplete, with the neither the gang system or positive/negative response system working very well (damn you buddies! always getting stuck in doorways!), and they were two of three reasons to play this game back in '99. The other was the violence/language.
Older reviews state that this game will take about 10-15 hours (and one I've read said 30--20 of which spent staring at the loading screen [areas are small (there are 39 total); dying is frequent]). I completed it in what felt like 4-5 hours. But then, I cheated and fixed my health/armor when I needed it. So...
...it was worth the $6.

This game is great, I still play it on multi-player occasionally. Watch out though the competition is hot.
The single player game was brilliant as you find out you don't kill everyone you come across as you can perform small missions for them for cash or items. Of course most of them can be executed if you wish afterwards.
Only thing that is disappointing is the lack of bots in multi-player, however there are mods out that fix that so no real problem there.
Most ppl. write about the single player mode, which is decent for a 2009 game. Voice acting and music gets the game setting right and makes the game memerable and almost a classic. But actually the LAN mode of the game is the real beauty for me. The maps are very well constructed and balanced in terms of weapon drops and tactics. The player creator is very versatile. And the different gamemodes eg. bagman is alot of fun. It all bodes for high adreanaline action.
Highly recomedable.
