Unfortunately 20 minutes of play for me on Win 11 w/64gm RAM 8GB graphic ram & all settings on high locked my computer up so bad the only way to get out of it was to physically turn the computer off.
Man, don't know where to start. Just have a look at the characters and their portraits to start with and it screams "amateuristic designers" all over the place. In no way do they represent the good old characters from the first 2 JA games. It's an insult seeing Shadow, Ice and Magic this way; the latter looking like a freaking mime player. What about Raven? She a freaking housewife now? Fidel looks like a drunken sailor instead of an Arabian terrorists/bomb expert but hey.. political correctness took over.
The game mechanics are obnoxious and the storyline a complete mess. The AI cheats and there is just very little resemblance with the original games. The interrupt system is broken and they borrowed some stuff from the Commando games which don't work here. Graphics are meh, voices are downright annoying and NOT funny.
It's all to clear this amateurstic studio and it's publisher never ever played the original games and did not have a clue what Jagged Alliance should look nor feel like. Such a shame this once brilliant franchise has been molested by some barely known studio.
That is asking for trouble and it shows...
this game is somewhat imbalanced in so many ways one couldnt imagine of. economics broken, no income -> broken, mines heavily guarded leaving no chance, enemies always hit the damn out of it whereas own SOLIDERS could not even hit one thing in front of them, so combat super broken, menu handling with pausing unpausing broken, one could not even sync different teams to one area to have more than 6 soldiers coming into a battle place because of different implausible movement speeds into sectors -> broken, no stuff dealers to get rid of the crap loot -> broken, loot in overall totally broken, distance of guns is a joke. i dont have a problem with difficulty and iam not new to this series or type of game, but if it s messed up like this, there is no fun, a game should bring up.
layed back for 2 years, if things might be fixed by either devs or mods.
This mix of live and turn based just doesn't work
- Choose one or the other, this mix of things is just not working.
The game mechanics are terrible
- You can't loot corpses for the gear that they had, just on occasion, if you are really, really lucky, the game might be generous enough to give you a single piece of shiny kit.
- The game cheats egregiously and obviously. You can max out your stats and still not hit consistently at reasonable ranges with good weapons. The enemy can one shot you across the map with an assault rifle in full auto, enemies have far more AP than any merc you can field... Just so many things wrong.
- The controls are archaic, annoying, restrictive, ill thought out, and just not commensurate with a modern title.
The sound design is ridiculous
- I DON'T want the characters to talk at me constantly. Every click. Every action. In ways that are supposed to be funny and endearing. No. Just no.
Everything about this game just adds up to be terrible. Deeply and abidingly disappointed. If this is the latest and greatest this series has to offer I will not be looking at the earlier offerings.
Since this game doesn't respect my time I won't bother putting much energy into a review. In short:
A good game would be one that's well paced, has comprehensible mechanics and fair, progressive design. You'd load a savegame at the start of a session, or when you tried something out.
Well, then there is JA3.
Stealth is broken and you need to watch youtube videos to figure out how it works, and why it doesn't. The game is ok for 1-2 hours until it throws a mission into your face you have to reload like 20 times to figure out that one exact way how to solve it. Usually you'll only find out you're fucked 15 min in, so have fun replaying the same crap over and over again, including forced cutscenes.
If you're that kind of special person who like to solve the same puzzle over and over again that might be your thing, everyone else get something like BG3.
