I got this as part of the "Luck of the Irish" promotion, so it was a good value. The game has a time tracker that lets you see how long you've been playing, mine clocked at about 2 hours by the time I beat the game. I did about half of the side quests I think. I liked how everything was animated, especially the swaying trees. The dialogue between characters was much like what a gamer is thinking when playing the game, like "okay, so smash stuff till the door opens?"
I'm writing this having just beaten the game, including the "Master Cave" levels, which are diabolical. Number 5 of those, in particular, took me hours to complete (after I worked out how). The millisecond-perfect dexterity required was something else. If I hadn't beaten it eventually, this would be a 4-star review (but it still needs to be made easier). The boss fights are too difficult for a casual oldie gamer like me. My 360 Controller takes the character up whenever I accidentally clicked the direction button (usually when I was trying to go down in a hurry). I swore many times at that. Having to restart a screen is usually painless but, on a handful of levels, is extremely irritating. I need a "five second undo" feature!! ;-)
Those moans aside, I thoroughly enjoyed the game. Yes, you can get to the ending very fast if you want to, but that doesn't mean you've beaten the game. That takes double or triple the total time. Great graphics, sound, design. Well worth the blind-buy from GOG. :-)
If you buy this game, you will:
- Have a lot of fun
- Have spent money well
- Have something to do to keep you entertained for about 6 hours on a single playthrough if you're going for 100% (with help).
Pros:
- Funny Characters, story, jokes.
- Puzzles that make your brain steam and are really satisfying to complete.
- Great art style, done by hand.
- Great soundtrack and boss fights
Cons:
- Controls can be a little confusing if you use a keyboard (at least for me), so a controller is advised for more fun.
- That the game isn't more expensive so they make more games like this.
Bottom line,
Triple SSS game, very well worth the money. A game you will not regret playing and will probably nag your friends to play it as well after proudly boasting how fun it is.
Got this game randomly at the Mutator promo; ended up playing this instead of the big titles I bought purposely ;). Imagine a simple zeldish 2D Sokoban++ puzzler, then add *really* cute characters and overworld, inane story and non sequitur comments about the enemies and some...identity issues of the protagonists. I spent two really fun evenings wandering around the world, solving the puzzles and looking into every nook and cranny for all the hidden cards and nonsense pop-up text (then two more frustrating evenings completing the optional Master Cave: trying, retrying, not understanding what I'm expected to do, failing to execute a sequence fast enough, muttering curses, caving in and looking for walkthrough...). I'm definitely keeping this one for the kids ;). Awesome for gamepad, couch and a big screen. So glad the GOG RNG selected this for my blind game - I could have missed a really fun experience!
P.S.: This should go without saying, but the game just plain works: no bugs, no slowdowns (on a low-end Intel NUC with integrated gfx), resolution configurable, input configurable. Issues in these areas can suck a lot of joy from playing, so I'm glad there were none.
There's this time in everyone life where after a very long time you find something precious. That precious thing captivates your soul and mind.
For me, it was this game. First time in my gaming history I managed to complete a game in 1 playthrough without getting bored for a single second. It was like a time warp.
Anyways, lets quit the drama and let me present you with a Short, sweet review just like the game.
Pros:
+ Amazing gameplay. It's downright fun.
+ Cleverly designed puzzles.
...+ The puzzles are not super hard niether are they super easy.
...+ It's a perfect mixture of hard yet non-frustating puzzle. Exactly what I look for in a VIDEO GAME.
+ Short and nice story. It's not bland like other puzzle games.
+ It's not serious either, the mood is quite humorous and vibrant.
+ The game does not overstay it's welcome.
...+ Fun fact: You can finish the game in under 15 minutes.
+ It offers pretty good replaybility.
...+ It's highly likely that you won't solve all the puzzles in your first playthrough.
...+ There are 3 different ways to play this game. (Each of which grants a different achievement too)
Cons:
- There was only exactly ONE situation where I thought the game/floor/level design could have been better.
- And that's an extremely low number for a puzzle game. (or any game tbh)
I got this game as a gift from a friend who bought it from humble bundle for $1.00 along with a couple of other games. But I'd say this game is worth it's full price if you're a completionist. If not, it's still worth picking up on -50% or less.
