Much like Pony Island, Inscryption is a game which breaks the fourth wall and shatters your expectations. Go into it blind, and enjoy it at face value. If the pace changes, keep playing and your efforts will be rewarded. Production value is insane on this one, and everything is extremely clever. I never found the difficulty to be unfair or unenjoyable--assuming you play your cards right.
Having defeated a few Uberbots, I have to say this is one of the most imaginative games I've experienced in years. I would easily include this alongside games like Frog Fractions, Pony Island (this developers first major title), The Stanley Parable and Doki Doki Literature Club in the list of games all gamers should play, except unlike those titles I would classify this as a full game experience, and the creativity on display here just doesn't seem to end.
Comparing to other reviews it seems apt to point out that the core of the game play loop is a narrative driven deck builder, not a rogue lite as some people were expecting. With that in mind, enjoy the ride.
First, my personal review: I loved it! Great game, original concepts, LOTS of replayability.
In response to other reviews:
-The free "DLC" which extends the replayability IS part of the GOG version. And it is great!
-As far as the "Trojan-like" behavior, it's no more than the meta stuff you'd find in Doki-Doki, One-Shot, or Undertale. Honestly, if you're worried about it, make a txt file on your desktop.
It surprises from beginning to end, I don't want reveal anything because it's part of the charm of the game itself. But I will say that as you advance it becomes more complex in a radical way and to advance you have to lose several times...
Don't be frustrated if you lose because that's how the game is conceived in a sneaky way, it's a pretty addictive card roguelike.
If you like this type of game you will love it.
Recommended.

Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words. This game starts strong and gains strength. The first act is atmospheric, creepy, has a reasonable deckbuilding game to it, some intrigue.
Then Act 1 ends and you are thrown into an entirely different game. The graphics change, the music changes, the style and tone and atmosphere change entirely. The card game mostly remains, though with different ways of building the deck. And you having to mostly start over. But it's in a gameboy style, light toned, kind of game with little hints of something more going on.
Then that act ends. Reset again. And you enter the blandest portion of the game. All the atmosphere and creepiness of act I is gone. What you did gain in act 2, some hints of lore, there's no focus on it here. It's just "Here play a game? Why? Because that's what we're doing." And while that is in character for your foe it is... unappealing.
The ARG elements are... eh. Not amazing.
This game is basically a tv series with an amazing first season that shouldn't have made its second because, even though it's "alright" it lead to season 3 which then ruined its memory fully. Pretend it's just one season. Go play the demo. Watch the rest if you're curious.
I'm near the end and will finish it, if anything changes I'll update. But that's my 2c for now.
