Imperialism 2 emphasizes decision making and minimalizes micromanagement. Never played this game back in the day but is one of the best 4X game I have played. The only downsides are the small field of view (the UI takes a fair amount of space) and the questionable combat behaviour of the enemy at times. A delicate balance between combat, trading, empire growth, exploration, exploitation and strategy. With decision making I meant that you will have to analyse your situation every couple of turns and possibly adjust your strategy every now and then (more so than in any other 4X game).
This is my favourite strategy game. Easy to learn, hard to master. I played many strategy games, civs, eu and many others, but this one is my number 1 strategy game! I love it!! Every year I do some new 1-3 gameplays, I learned some special tactics, won on hard level. I like economic management here, and road managments. Imperialism II is like chess and this is what makes it great. I Higly recommend
I'm probably biased, as I grew up with this game, however, for me this is one of the best turn-based strategy games. Exploration, Economy, Diplomacy, turn-based combat in the perfect balance between complexity and essentials. While you progress thru 3 centuries you research new techs that, step by step, transform economy and combat. Every game develops differently with the random map generator. If only artillery was a little less powerful...
