In typical Obsidian fashion, where almost every single one of their products follows the pattern "identical to game X except Y", Icewind Dale is simply Baldur's Gate except more focused on combat. You'd think that's a good thing... well it isn't, because if you're a fan of BG, you liked it for the (stupid) story, (generic) setting and (retarded) characters, as well as (idiotic) humor, not the (braindead) combat. And if you aren't, well, there isn't anything for you here either, except watching ugly sprites trying (and failing) to hit each other.
I don’t even know where to start.
The UI/UX is mediocre and the overall menu design is mediocre at best. There is no explanation or guide how to play this game. What is AC? THAC0 what is this, trolls that only die with fire or acid? where was this explained??? Nothing is explained, you must figure it out as you play.
The fights are a bit hard and i think that a good thing but do i need to plan every single fight? Yes, i do; initially is good but after a while it gets exhausting.
Its exhausting having to run around in every single fight, its exhausting that the enemies AI keeps targeting the most weak character every single time and you have to keep running around and manage other 5 party members.
The party AI is low-average and keeps doing ridiculous mistakes, but if you turn it off they don’t do anything even if you tell the party to attack! You have to input the commands several times in order to work.
The walking algorithm is dumb, keeps sending people through the longest routes, lots of time the party member can’t even walk they just bump into each other, it’s so good when it happens in the middle of boss fights and you die as result...
The difficulty is not balanced, the Yxonumei boss is MUCH harder to fight against than any other enemy. Its almost impossible to beat without massive grinding and the room where this enemy is has traps to raise the stakes even higher!
This is just a 3gb bug festival that relies on luck in order to be playable.
One race can't be ranger, the other one can't be paladin. Only pure humans can be what ever they want. That's racist, fucking racist, according to the world we live in now. Great game through. 5stars, but still racist, cause this is suppose to upset me now, from what i am told. F......ing racist bastards!!! Great game though guys.
Great. Just take the original, try to make its graphics more colorful and fancy, and we are done, right? No, not close enough. Well, let's then take the MMO approach! Do our best to nerf skills, balance classes, and banish useful game exploits that many people use (like crippling summon numbers, overpowered spells, or even xp loopholes). Are we done yet? Hell no! Just wait until we declare of correcting bugs, even though for ONE bug we attempt to correct, TEN, yes, TEN new appear in its stead. And let 90% of the people complaining unanswered. But are we done yet? Hell, NO! Let's just price the damn thing near 20 euros, even though the originals, costing less than 10, properly modded, work even better than our fanciful tangled mess of bugs. But, when are we going to be done? Ok, soon; add 3 new npcs, one or two new locations and quest lines, little bit of better multiplayer environment, cartoonify the cutscenes a little bit, remove or replace with totally irrelevant ones some of them, and there, you are good to go...
No, thanks. If the originals never happened, the EEs would surely be the top dog. There are many people who enjoy those, and for good reason, they are good games on their own accord. But if you played the old ones, if you know and use mods, if you use exploits and like to powergame, then most probably, these remakes are NOT for you. They are going to IRRITATE you, a great deal.
I only purchased the BG enhanced editions. And this, only to fund GoG, complete my collection, and enjoy importing an endgame character in the beginning of things. For me, who have the old versions, the new ones seems crappy beyond what words can express. The choice is yours. But had to say how badly they suck, for certain types of gamers, those new releases. I hope and wish you to enjoy them; me and some others, certainly don't, and won't. But praise to GoG for bringing them! I am seriously tempted to buy it only for rewarding GoG! Anything that isn't Steam exclusive...!
For those who've already purchased the original and would like to upgrade to this enhanced edition without another full out purchase. Similar to the way GoG handled the Shadowrun expansion upgrade. $20 is just silly.
