HROT is a single-player retro FPS set in a small socialist country neighboring Soviet Union (Czechoslovakia) after an unspecified disaster in 1986. Those times were dark and terrifying and so is the game.

You start in a civil defense shelter deep under a Prague Metro station. As a proud holder of the military readiness badge you know what your duty is: put on a non-functioning gas mask, load the vz. 52 pistol and protect the peace and your socialist homeland from the strange intruders*.

  • The classic gameplay and vibe of romeric shooters from 1990s including a fitting brown retro aesthetic.
  • You'll find a shotgun, a vz. 13 SMG, a rocket launcher and even some secret experimental Soviet battery-powered weapons (e.g. a ball lightning launcher). If you run out of ammo, you might find the hammer and sickle coming in handy.
  • Handcrafted levels inspired by real locations with an emphasis on historical details. Every level contains socialist paraphernalia which nowadays can only be found in museums or your grandma's attic (Eastern Bloc only).
  • Flushable toilets and destructible light bulbs.
  • A custom engine written in Pascal imitating 1990s software-style rendering with unfiltered textures and polygon jitter.

Masterpiece! 5+/5

What can i say. It's a masterpiece. The graphics style reminds of Chasm - The Rift or Quake1. The gameplay is slower than Quake, but snappy. The weapons are ALL aweseome, and HROT even got the right feeling for the double barrel shotgun. The atmospheric music is a great match to the atmosphere. But the best thing is just the awesome load of funny stuff in the game. It doesn't take itself too serious while also depicting a very interesting timeline/story. Each level is different and has something new to offer, you can interact with almost everything you see. A bit like Duke Nukem 3D back then. If you don't speak Czech, you can hit 'e' to translate every word. I won't spoiler anything, but this is such a gem, you gonna have a great time laughing your ass off while also having an engaging gameplay.

Perfect Czech take on Quake

This game is honestly fantastic for people who are into the revival old school FPS like Dusk. The atmosphere is amazing - albeit a bit brown (but honestly can you think of any other colors for 1980s Soviet Europe?). Enemies are varied and the boss encounters are engaging. The weapons while not revolutionary are mostly very satisfying to use but I did find that ammo was a little stingy on some levels. The main thing that this game nails (that others often fail to capture) is the intuitive level design - each area feels distinct and I rarely found myself hunting for the Horse door, after getting Horse Key for example. The music and sound effects are really well done - the tracks really remind me of the more ambient stuff from Quake 1, I'd be very interested to see what else this developer makes.

love it, ending was kinda cheeky being a bad boss as a reference to quake but the rest of it was kiler
