Homeworld® Remastered Collection

I loved the original HW games, so I was thrilled to get my hands on the Remastered version. The result: HW:R is pretty but deeply flawed. Unfortunately, they tinkered too much with the original game and the result is a game that punishes you for doing the right thing (which makes me feel like I'm in school again; thank you, not an experience I'd like to be reminded of). How does this work? The moment you manage to build up your fleet, the AI gets a scaled up force in the next mission, and the scaling gets seriously absurd from a certain size. What is the best strategy against that? Simple--destroy your fleet. You read that right. Just never do what I did -- keep an eye on the damage scale of ships and pull them out for repairs. Instead, you need to develop an attrition attitude--just throw in units to overwhelm the enemy with no regard to losses. Compare this to the original campaign of HW1 where skillful planning led you to build up a powerful force and this made the later game easier-yes-but at the same time you felt that you have mastered the game. You CAN adjust the difficulty with mods, but that makes me feel that HW:R was a rush job that wasn't properly tested.

the good: its homeworld. you will care about your ships. when you see a ship blows apart, you know you failed them. the best music in all of video game history. they didnt need to say anything, you saw it and felt their despair. My dad had an original copy in the 2000s that came with manuals and stuff. The game was beautiful, and the manual was the first non-kid fiction I read. I loved it, got into sci-fi, and now work in aerospace. If there's some life-changing piece of media for me that'd be Homeworld. The game is decent. The campaign is still fun and challenging today. Music, story and delivery are fantastic. Too bad they went into the whack direction for HW2, and I can't imagine what they'd write for HW3. You just can't have good things any more can you

This is the third time I've bought Homeworld 1&2. The First time was on CD-ROMs, the second was Steam, and now from GOG. The new graphics are excellent. The music is still amazing. I've played dozens of realtime space strategy games, from Sins of a Solar Empire to Star Trek: Armada and many others. While all of them have their positives, Homeworld is the only game I return to and replay every few years. Its plot is amazing, told in stark black and white cutscenes that are full of depth, and some of the most emotional gameplay I've ever experienced. I'm not ashamed to admit my eyes watered at the line 'not even beacons' from the first game. I very highly recommend Homeworld for gamers who like realtime strategy.
